Title: Introduction and a question
Post by: Joseph on 09 October 2010, 22:59
Hi,

I have been reading this forum since just before I bought my GTI in March.Infact this forum played a part in my decision to buy. This

is my first GTI so do not really have advice for others but have found this site a great resource - Thanks to all who have posted.

I love the Car, I love the way the car drives and find myself congratulating the car when it laughs at any road or corner i show it. I

dont have any problems at all with the car except that noise upon acceleration at about 2500 RPM.

I have read alot of information regarding this topic on numerous forums but decided to book it in to my local VW garage to get it checked out

for myself.

They told me what everyone seems to have been told, that it is a charachteristic of the engine, it is not causing any problems and not

to worry. I guess there is not alot that can be done about this one - unless someone reading this knows diferent and can offer any

advice.
I have a question - when i got the car back - its different. The power delivery is different and its sound has changed. The car was in

the garage Friday till late and the service people have not been there for me to question them about it. Is there an explanation for

this? A machanic I know suggested they have may have reset the engine when they have been working on it and this would explain the

change.

I cannot wait till monday for someone to explain this and thought one of you guys/gals willl surely know the answer.

The car still feels as quick - its just quick in a different way now. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Hi Joseph

Welcome to this wonderful forum, no doubt someone will be along shortly to give you the answer you need.  In the meantime tell us about your GTI eg colour, spec etc.

PS May see you around as I live across the moors in a smallish coastal town very popular for Dracula

Hi Gizzy, (aunt with same name, are you Hunarian also?)

Mk6 GTI 3 Door Manual, Deep Black Pearl, Monza Shadows,RNS 510. I didnt really have choices with options due to timing of scrappage scheme. I had two days to beat the deadline, i knew it was only the GTI for me, JCT600 in Bradford had the right colour (the stealthiest)and and monza shadows so I bought. The only thing i miss arethe xenons really. I will post some pics to go with all the other great looking cars in the picture section very soon.

Hello Joseph and a warm welcome.
All I can think of, and I might be wrong, is they reset your ECU withe the latest firmware.
Enjoy your car and please post pictures at your convenience.

Very nice, and black of course (the very best colour IMO). No actually Gizzy is just a user name (after my late cat) I am Amanda in actual fact, so once again welcome and enjoy your lovely car.

I think theres a latest firmware update out there that changes the caracteristics of the engine so suspect they uploaded this.
Is it like a exhaust resonance sound your hearing as mine does that.

Thanks for the welcome,

The noise which i hear is a raspy kind of noise at 2500 RPM. There are many posts regarding this on other forums and some on this one also. http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f112/mk6-gti-rattle-upon-acceleration-47765-35.html (http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f112/mk6-gti-rattle-upon-acceleration-47765-35.html)  the link is for the gti aus site which talks about it. I think many people thought it a wastegate issue, some a downpipe issue.
Do you have this sound?
I will be calling CW service tomorrow to see what exactly they did during investigation which has led to the change in the car. I will post what they say to me.
Thanks for your comments so far, i did think this was an issue with all 2.0 tsi engines but now i am not so sure.  :undecided:

Hello and welcome Joseph.
Mine has a rasp at 2500 too. I think it may be to do with the sound resonator widget thingy.

And Gizzy, my hometown has connections with Dracula too.

I would not COUNT against this!

Firstly, it's a bloody anonnying noise.

It's not generated by the noise pipe/generator (apparently not fitted to Euro models).

The thread I've posted below together with the previous posted one from vwwatercooled
provide some good info, sounds clips etc.

http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8045

You're not going to like the current status;

"the car rattles between 2400 and 3000/min from the engine. The exhaust gases jiggle the wastgate valve = the wastegate linkage rattles"

Fundamental design flaw, no fix from VW, although there is a TSB about it, where they ask mechanics to put a weight on the linkage to see if it reduces noise. So MAYBE a fix in the future

Also, some forums posts have claimed that VW state the noise reduces with mileage.

Thank you all very much for your replies.
I have checked out the other forums David and it just makes me a little bit sad. It is a wonderfull car inspite of this but its just frustrating that this problem exists. I kind of just want to get back to enjoying the car and leave this alone but i think i will find that hard to do. When you spend £25000 on a car i think you should be able to expect only joy.
I shall follow the threads with interest and if i get any different information from another VW garage I think i may call - i will post.

ha yes, now that would be a problem

This is the least of my rattles
But iirc the TSB i read said that a design change for future production was now inforce and so cars from this year no longer suffer it it was late last year when i read it.

HOLY SH!T!! you spent £250000 on a golf??? i'd be seriously annoyed with the rattle at that price! although i only paid £26000 for mine it's still a bit annoying!
shouldn't be happening at all but at least you can't hear it with the windows up and the climate control blasting.

I test drove one that was built in July, unfortunately it's still there. USA cars built recently definately still have the problem....
