Did I read that you can change 5th gear for a different longer gear?
-
iirc, yes, from the 4+e box
-

ah ok, sounds good, il have to source one, anything else i can get one out of?
-
4+E on a GTI* are you tight?
*assuming you have GTI.
-
what golfs were 4+E?

Yeh I have a GTI, I only want to change the 5th gear, not the whole box, I figure il save petrol, its not like I accelerate much in 5th so I may as well get the revs lower.
-
Not much point on an 8v. I hear they get good MPG. Are you one of the select few who choose the 16V?
-
Very little point in changing to be honest.
-
you can put a diesel one in, but you need torques to make it worth it, 1.8 8v imo not got nuff torques

Nah its an 8v, does a good 10 mpg more than any of my 16vs did. I miss the power abit tho.
-
I average 32.7, Im sure I read that theres a 5th gear that does 70 at just over 2000 rpm?
-
the 4+e fifth swap is the most recognised 5th swap
-
If you had a 16V then I would say give it a go. Like me , 3.5-4,000 rpm at 75-80 mph is not to good for economy.
You can get 6th gear cogs/adaptors for the Mk2 golf. There was a thread on here about 6 months ago on it.
Doesnt the 1.6 Driver have 4+E gear?
-

The 5th gear on a 8v isnt much different from that really dude, im right up there around 3500 rpm at 70ish too.
Dont think Il bother with an extra gear, il just change the 5th.
So possibly the driver box is a 4+E? can anyone confirm that?

do a quick search, i asked this a few years ago and got good answers.
I just never followed through on it, as i couldn't be bothered. If i crunched motorway miles, i reckon the savings would have been worthwhile
-
Wouldnt it take ages to notice a difference though.? In savings, would you do it yourself.?

Depends how much I can get the bits for, My mate would put it in for me so the only expenses are the ones from buying the bits.
Thing is, I had another gti once and it had a 5th gear that did 70 at about 2200 rpm,
I figure that the amount of time I spend in 5th gear, I could save moneys, I do drive long distance quite abit.
-
Ahh fair enough, would of been pointless if you was paying someone.
Mines awful, 4k at 80  with no radio is harsh lol

Searched again using your username, no luck again, maybe it doesnt go back that far? :undecided:
Im well up for doing it, I just wanna make sure I get the right gearbox to get bits out of.

in an 8v? christ i was getting 42mpg in my old one!

yeh... although, if I drive a REALLLY long way on the motorway, I can get it around 40 mpg

" Very little point in changing"
I disagree.
I have an 0.75 5th gear cog in my AUG box. The standard one was 0.89, so the revs have dropped from 3500 @ 70mph to about 2800 rpm @ 70mph. What I've noticed is obviously a decrease in acceleration but an increase in mpg. Having spent 18 months travelling 90 miles a day (the reason for the swap) I recorded the following:
44 mpg @ 70 mph.
41 mpg @ 75 mph.
37 mpg @ 80 mph.
The revs (and power) are really too low @ 60 mph although the mpg is up near 50 or so.
The gear cog came out out of a 4T box. Mattneck has tried the same thing, although he was unlucky with his gearbox that broke. If I did the conversion again I would look for a 0.80 gear. This would give better economy (than stock) and a little more acceleration. Although having recently had her tuned she pulls well enough in 5th for me. Definately don't go for anything longer than the 0.75 though - you'd be going nowhere on the motorway.
-
Oh yeah, the box cost me £15 of ebay with a 1.6 engine attached to it, needless to say the rest went for scrap. As I was having my 2nd gear syncro replaced the dude just swapped the 5th gears during so it didn't cost me extra.
Motorway driving is a pleasure now, and much quieter...

Ah awesome, so are 4T boxes easy to find? are they on any 1.6?

I'm not sure if they are on all 1.6L, the 4S has a the same 5th gear too. Alternatively if you went for a 0.80 cog, they are in CHE boxes which come out of mk 3 golfs so maybe more chance of finding one of them.
Just nose on ebay and here, someone somewhere will have one for sale.
-
A CHD box with a 0.75 5th gear. In Kent but if its cheap enough have it shipped.

They are about, hopefully a little closer than this one..

Just picked up a mk3 1.6 box for 25 quid.
Is that a 0.80 yeh?

Get the code off the bell housing and check it against the details on:
www.brokevw.com
Not sure if thats the right address, its in this thread somewhere.
Good luck.
