Title: Blip the throttle and the car almost stalls (battery lights flicker on dash)
Post by: drivebycar on 09 October 2010, 16:52
Hi!,

Have tried to search but not had much luck.

The car is a 1990 GTI 8v and have noticed a couple of things -

When the car is idling and you blip the throttle, say rev quickly to 1500 then take my foot off the accelerator, when it drops back to idle it almost stalls then catches itself. When it catches itself the battery light flickers and the goes off when idle returns back to normal. It has had a new battery recently so shouldnt have any problems with that.

On another, or possibly related note, there is a buzzing coming from under the back seats, fuel pump?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The buzzing sounds like the fuel pump, My car was behaving similarly to this and the connectors on the battery were not making very good contact I also changed the HT leads at the same time and it resolved the problem so could have been either

buzzing is the fuel pump, battery light coming in is normal if the revs dip below normal idle levels. Ie. If the car nearly stalls.

Does it do it when hot and cold? I wouldn't worry if its doing it only when cold - after 40s it should be fine (even if the cold rich enhancement isnt working right)

It will idle at 1100 ish for a few minutes then drop down to 850. So nothing wrong there i dont think. It is also taking a few times to start.

It is doing it when its cold.

Does that mean the fuel pump is on its way out, or could just be the connection to the battery isn't great?

Thanks

look at the throttle wiring, they like to snap behind the tb. make sure your throttle cable isn't too tight, the throttle should hit the stop firmly. with the engine off open and close the throttle you should hear the idle switch click, if not you need to adjust it. take the inlet boot off and look underneath, you'll spot it! its bloody fiddly to adjust in situ, you need an angle screwdriver. need to set it so it clicks just as the throttle closes to the stop.

My last golf was a nightmare for idleing and the revs dropping, found the solution, it was the little rubber gromit under the flying saucer, got one for a £1 from gsf and work a treat.  just a thought :)
