I've somehow managed to get a pencil wedged behind the open lid of the ashtray.
The lid is now stuck open and won't budge.
I can't get my hands in to remove it as there isn't enough room.
Has anyone taken this out to get to the buttons etc?
Or better still got any diagrams?
Cheers

Eyebrow pencil?
This must be a first.
Most unusual but annoying.

The ashtray is held in with 2 torx screws.
To remove it, you must first remove your gear surround. Its very simple - just put your hand in the rubber gaitor, and grab the surround - and firmly pull it up. The photo is from my MK5, but its the same principle. Stick your fingers in where the white bits are, and pull up!

The surround will remain attached to the gear stick, but you can pull it out of the way.
Then you can remove 2 x Torx screws which hold the ashtray in.
Once the screws are out, you can simply lift the ashtray out - but be careful as the connectors for the buttons need to be removed. You'll also need to remove the connector for the 12v socket.

Brilliant.
Thanks p3eps. I'm going to have a go tomorrow with a vacuum cleaner and straw and if it doesn't work I'll give your suggestion a go.
Cheers.

p3asa,I hope you don't mind, but am so inquisitive to find out how this happened.

Dead easy.
The ashtray sits open as I use a plug in phone charger. I also have a microfibre cloth in the ashtray so I can wipe the stereo of grubby finger prints. I came out of work with a pencil and just shoved it in that space as well.
Obviously the cloth is quite bulky folded up so it allowed the pencil that was sitting on top of it to roll down the back of the open lid of the ashtray. Voila.

Merci! Now I can visualise it.
-
Did you get it out?!

I never got a chance to try this morning so I thought I would try a set of these when I got to work
(http://www.medisave.co.uk/product_thumb.php?img=images/7993_Magills-forceps.jpg&w=229&h=200)
but by the time I got there the vibrations must have worked the pencil free and its slipped right down under the ashtray.
It now shuts but I've got a rogue pencil on the loose
I'll need to wait till later in the week then I'll give your suggestion a go.

The gear stick mechanism?!?!
 I've no idea! just popped in my head, you know how it goes in the movie, pencil rolls where it shouldn't, touches a power source causing a spark which makes surrounding plastics start to smoulder, locks close and can't be unlocked! aargh!!!!!!!! Sorry.

Ahhh get you're drift
Cheers mate
