Title: Steering rack please help!!
Post by: Ardz83 on 08 October 2010, 19:04
Hi guys. My mate is currently stuck on his driveway trying to fit a mk2 gti rack into his 1.3 mk2. Will the collum piece from the 1.3 fit on the gti spline?

He has been on it all day but cant get it to go on due to the angle of the collum knuckle but i think its a different size. He is now taking the dash out to undo the steering collum.

Hope this makes sense.

Cheers
Dan

pas and manual racks use a different uj, so if you're upgrading to pas that'll be why! you also need a different uj boot

Sorry they are both manual racks.

if both manual then they'll bolt up fine, just a case of patience and maybe some harsh language
note the uj will only slide on 1 way as the rack spline has a missing tooth where the split in the uj fits if that makes sence, also you need to remove the clamp bolt from the uj otherwise it wont go on

Ahh right so it will only fit in one way?

aye, if you look carefully at the spline on the rack you'll note it has a tooth or 2 missing, then if you look at the uj theres a slit in it so it can open and close when bolt loosened/tightened. the missing tooth fit into that slit :)
