Am considering the purchase of German style number plates for my Mk2 Gti. Not strictly de-rigeur but was wondering does anyone have them and are the boys in blue tolerant to them?

covered MANY MANY TIMES

Did see the thread above but just wondered if its one of those things they turn a blind eye to in general- just like when Police cars park on double yellow lines!
-
brief run down then as you missed the point :lipsrsealed:
Illegal ones - you CAN & WILL get reamed by the fuzz if they are having a bad day
LEgal ones - you can still get reamed and have a fight on your hands to prove your innocense cos not all copper are clued up
-
Cheers matey, it was more a plump at personal experience as to whether you can melt the hearts of igneous rock
-
Not worth the hassle to be honest, I was fined twice for mine.
-
I wouldn't touch 'em
-
Shame really they look quality  will heed the warnings rather than push my luck.
-
i'm not going to tempt fate by commenting about mine

Havent been done yet (|Touch wood)

I've always been told that from a distance you can't tell if a plate is legal or not just because it's pressed, obviously different fonts are different.
I drove around with illegal pressed plates for quite some time, the only time I ever got pulled up on them was due to the fact that an error on the Police system showed my car as uninsured when it was in fact insured. I proved it by the roadside, but when they went over my car with a fine tooth comb they saw the plates and gave me the ticket which means you have seven days to replace them. (I also didn't have a front plate at the time, schoolboy error)
Copper was alright enough about it, wasn't any attitude from him.
At the end of the day, generally, if you don't drive like an ass and draw attention to yourself you don't get pulled over.

The other problem is some ANPR cameras cannot read them.

Ok, that I wasn't aware of.

I only found out when I was pulled over and fined.

Sadly I can run with silver text on black pressed plates. God I love the Isle of Man

ANPR can read pressed plates, which are reflective. So if pressed plates have a British Standard number on them and conforms to the Road Vehicles Regulations 2001

Not always, uk font yes but we in this thread were talking about german font, lol
The only reason I got pulled for mine the 1st time was a ANPR camera could not read them.

Considering buying a set for the golf as mine need replacing due to damage..
Is the license plate sticky tape stuff from halfords actually good enough or will my plates fall off? Don't particularly want to drill holes through the plates..

You can get round this by buying number plate surrounds. I have some wolfsburg ones coming, I really like how they look. The double sided tape is good, I put four strips on my old ones and were a job to take off when I needed to replace them.
-
The sticky pads from Halfrauds work perfectly! Had mine on for a WHILE now with no problems and it looks tidy with no holes :afro:
-
Trim tape is a better bet for sticking them on to be honest.

i just received my pressed metal plates from Dubmeister and purchased the surround for the rear .
i used the original screw holes to fix the rear surround in and then the rear plates just clicked in . On the front I used Halfords double sided pads . I did use 2 lots on them though

How did you get the documents to them? I want to order but it says you've got to send them in. Unwilling to send important documents through the post tbh.

I had my plates and documents back within a week. Sent them on the Monday, arrived back with me on a Thursday
Sent them via special and put the fee of a replacement V5 as the value of the documents should the worst happen. I also photocopied my V5

I was not keen on sending my paperwork in the post and did try hard to go down the route of scanning docs and e mailing . But the have to have sight of original paperwork . I did send it by special delivery ( did cost near £5.00 , this was insured for loss and you can track delivery on the internet .
Must say Dubmeister did receive docs in 24 hours , rang them the next day to confirm they have details and payment and if they have any issues , they confirmed they have completed them and they are in the return post .
All in all good service and plates do look different to others .
