Title: Water temp light flashing
Post by: moby dick on 07 October 2010, 12:07
The watere temp light is flashing intermittently on my 90 Mk2. There doesn't seem to be a problem with the water as the levels are fine and the temp indicator doesn't get much over half way. The light sometimes comes on from cold and other times when the temp gets to normal on the guage. Any suggestions for the cause?

I had this with mine & It was the temp sender unit...

Got a Proper VAG one and sorted It...

I would read RJ's thread on checking the coolling system in the Info & Mate section (Top of Page) before buying one, just in case its something else...

I have fingers crossed writing this - that makes typing difficult. I unplugged the blue temp sender and then replaced it. The light does not now flash but does light up on ignition so I am hoping that this has solved the problem.

You mean the one in the cluster of lights? If so it should come on when you turn the ignition on.. and then go off!!

What does the temp gauge read when the car is warmed up??

Did you top up the expansion tank with some G12 Antifreeze??

Be careful to monitor the fluid levels over the next few weeks. Could be early signs water pump is on the way out.

Yes the cluster water temp light flashes during ignition and then goes off (it was that light that was flashing). Temp guage is OK just over half way when warmed up and coolant levels are steady.

blue sender is nothing to do with gauge, thats for the ecu. its the black sensor which is for the gauge. if car is pre-90 there is a 42 or 43 relay above the fusebox which is for the level sensor warning system, pull this out and it will disable it. the issue could also be the temp sensor, somehow my mates one failed in such a way the dash would read fine but the light was triggered.  try bridging the pins on the header tank level sensor with a bit of wire, if that sorts it the sensor is bust. if its a pre-90 you can remove the sensor to clean the pins, if post-90 whole tank needs changing

Thanks for that. I'll have a look for the relay too

Truely wierd update. I have worked out that the temp light flashes from cold start in the morning, but from then on the light stays off at restarts all day. It does come at ignition (as it should) but then stays off. Coolant levels are fine and the engine runs at just half over on the temp guage so it looks alright. I think I can live with that.
