Title: mk2 8v gti cutting out..choke??
Post by: scooter perv on 07 October 2010, 09:10
Hi all after a bit of advice please. Can anyone explain to me how the cold running system on a fuel injected car works?
The situation: Had the car 3 yrs or so but for the last couple it has a tendacy to cut out. Now its taken me this long to work out that it only does it once on a journey and usually within the first couple of miles or 5 miles at the most. You`ll be driving along at 30-40 mile an hour and the car dies, flick the ignition switch and you can usually do a running start and its fine. Wont do it again on that journey but if you stop for half hour or so it will do it again. Doesnt cut out in summer at all or very rarely but now its getting colder again its playing up. Im thinking there must be a relay or similar somewhere that tells the car its at the right tempreture and cuts the choke out and im thinking that this maybe cutting the ignition out aswell but im clutching at straws. Ive changed the ignition switch (what a b!tch to do that) incase it was that but no joy..Anybody shed some light for me please??its getting a tad dangerous and the missus is bending my ear

first port of call if its deffo temperature related would be the blue temp sender   its blue .. had an electrical plug going into it and is in a hose tht comes out the front of the engine :P

£13 for a brand new one from gsf or euro

Pretty sure I changed that when I fist had the car and related to another problem but will give it a shot thanks.

Would I be able to test that by switching the wires over to the other tempature sender next to it?

jus tpull it off when the car is running ... no change ... its fubared
altho i recently swapped mine oiut and it cured a problem i was having  but when i had tried just pulling the wire off it it did make a change so obviously wasnt totally fecked just on its way out

Ok new blue tempo sender and still the same. Anything else related to the cold running I can check?

Is it a genuine vag sender, the ones from ecp/gsf are total garbage.

You didn't metion it, bu i'm assuming (from the blue sender) that it is a digi? Follow rj's guide amd report bak

Its from GSF but with the same problem so highley unlikely its gonna be two giving me the same symptom. The car dosent need setting up it runs sweet as a nut, no dieing out at junctions, no air leaks now it just cuts out. You drive at 30-40mph and bang its dead. Most often in exactly the same place every day. It only does it the once per journey and its worse in cold. There has gotta be some relay or switch somewhere thats faulty?? Pump relay??

hardly my description of sweet

If it happens in the same place, then its more likely to be temp. related.

As Ben has said it has to be temp related, I would still try another sender.

Getting desperate now chaps
new vw temp sender and same problem..Its getting worse and worse now, cutting out 3+ times on a 6 mile journey is the norm and the biatch usually on a bad bit of road. In the last week its now cutting out and refusing to start for a few minutes. I hadnt used the car for a few days because of the snow but took it out today and broke down 1/4 mile from home and refused to start. Managed to get a plug lead off and no spark so then took coil lead off dizzy and no spark from that either. Went home to get some tools and when I got to car it started and managed to get it home again. Change the coil to an old one I had laying about and also an old dizzy cap and rotary arm but no difference. What could it be? Few things running through me head at mo and thats the immobiliser (one you have a key fob with an electrical conector that you slot in before it will start) ecu??..really desperate now for any advice on where to go from here. Its starting but I dont trust it to go anywhere

well think that problem may be sorted now
fingers crossed it was the coil but done 15-20 miles today and no cutting out which would never normally happen

Next time it happens, unhook the wiring from the hall sender on the dizzy and reseat it - or give it a tap/wiggle - and see if it starts up?

The hall sender (if broken) can deteriorate in performance with heat, so when cold, its fine, run it for a while and it behaves unpredictably. I can also cause it to not start at all and all other sorts of random things.

Hit my project link, and go to the first page, then click the link for "spark or fuel" (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=49436.msg1520084#msg1520084) - follow that next time it breaks down, it might help give you an insight (rather than blindly buying parts).

Yes Ben, when it broke down and wouldnt start one of the things I did was disconect the hall sender, coil switch etc and thats when it ran ok for a while so it could be that,,are they expensive?
the problem I have now is that it cuts out when driving as per usuall but starts imediately which makes it a problem for me to find out whats wrong.

Could be crappy wiring, go through that guide of mine anyway - it will help debugging.

I got a recon Bosch dizzy with new hall sender for ~£80

have you replaced the TCI-H unit, thats the 7 pin thing in the scuttle area driver side, bolted to the ECU bracket

The tci-h is next on my list as its not too expensive from ebay but as for forking out for a new dizzy
times are hard in a big way so hope its not the hall sender. To be honest the cars falling apart round me so may have to scrap it soon :embarassed:

There's some fairly basic dizzy tests here http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=49436.msg1520084#msg1520084

Replacing parts endlessly isn't great for diagnosis and is Expensive!

Without  a doubt Ben I agree, but my problem is when I want the car to cut out and not start it always does making it (imho) quite hard to diagnose a fault when everythings running. Only once a couple of weeks ago did it cut out and refuse to start which is when I found there was no spark, but no sooner had I tested the plugs and core lead it was running again..Im at a loss tbh, just hoping its the relay.

You can diagnose the hall sender without the car being dead, just have a look at the link I posted.

Cheers Ben..I have read your write up and im going out with multi meter to check a few things tomorrow. The car is now dead!! Started then dies after a few minutes and now wont fire. Noticed that pump wasnt priming so shorted the large pins on relay and pump run for a while now the pump wot turn even with the pins shorted. Fed a wire from a live conection into one of pins on relay but still no pump action. Sometimes I will turn key and pump will run but car wont start then when I try it again the pump is dead.Put it up for sale as spares now cos ive had enough. Let me down when I needed it most xmas day and im sick of it, spent most of xmas afternoon trying to fix it with no joy..

Pumps not priming, no power to pump inside boot. Voltmeter on middle pin on hall sender and no voltage shown. Tried it with and without the dizzy lead earthed (read somewhere maybe manual that on digifants the earth dizzy lead had to be earthed) Also have no rev counter now and clocks gone mental but that maybe cos I dissconected battery.
