If you have 312mm front brakes, you will need at least 16" wheels.

In all honesty there will not be that many 16" 5x112 steels around, so you would probably be better off searching for 16" or 17"alloys. There will be loads of scruffy ones with worn tyres on around for not much money.

I would guess something from a Audi may fit.

Mk5 steels are 15" and are cheap enough. I'm sure 15" is enough to fit over standard GTI brakes. Not sure where you would get 16" steels, probably one of the bigger Audis as Wayne said, but the 16" mk5 sportline wheels are available cheap second hand.

I'm sure 15" is enough to fit over standard GTI brakes.

15" wheels WILL NOT fit over 312mm brakes.

Most steels will be 15", there are very few 16's. My Passat has a 16" steel spare, but I wouldn't have thought there are many people wanting to upgrade their spares.

As I said before, scruffy alloys ought to be cheap enough.

thanks for the posts , 16x6.5 js steels are not that uncommon they seemed to be fitted to sharranes and tourans , but picking up a couple of second hand 17 inch alloys might be alot easier i think

Get a full set of secondhand 17"ers.
Fit winter tyres on all four wheels or you may well end up spinning.

My 4 winter wheels will go on at the end of October.

My winter tyres are some cheapies from mytyre.  Much better than any fancy GY F!'s when the temperature drops below 6C, nevermind actual snow.

http://www.mytyres.co.uk/

Above site you can price winter tyres for your car. If you choose the option “Steel Wheels with Tyres” from the left, they ship your winter tyres mounted on steel rims for about £15 extra per wheel
