Title: Mk1 Fuel pump
Post by: sinatra on 17 August 2003, 09:27
I'm new to this site and also to golf ownership.
I have a '91 gti cabriolet that wont start. Left it in the garage whilst on holiday and I think the fuel pump has packed up (no ticking when the ignition is switched on).
Does anyone know how I can confirm this is the problem and if they know of a reliable mobile mechanic that could fix/replace it? (I'm afraid days of scrambling around under cars give me no pleasure any more). I'm in north Hertfordshire.

are u sure that your battery is earthed to the gearbox?

if the cable which leads from your negative outlet on the battery to the gearbox is boken or is dirty on the ends then your car wont start unless you earth it.it might just be that the connection is lost due to dirt.give it a clean and see how u go.

if it isnt this then im lost

Can you explain a bit more, what do you mean by "no ticking when the ignition is switched on". Do you mean that you can't hear the fuel pump prime ? If so then you might need to check the fuel relay as that's quite a common problem. Do a search for something like "fuel relay" in this section as it's been covered a few times before.
