Title: what gearbox?

hello as the title suggests ... i'm needing a replacement gearbox for my '88 8v gti pb .... can any helpful fellows list which boxes i can use? 16v ones perhaps?

020 - they'll all fit, 8v/16v

From memory I think the clutch plates are different sizes...

Input shafts differ 22 to 24mm 8v to 16v.. new clutch required if using 16v box on whats currently fitted with an 8v box..


Kezza - jsut got myself a 0.75 gearset for my 5th after the box i did the 5th on before when you got in touch with me gave up after 4 days on the road officially - couldnt believe it! 3rd gear overshift :(

Thats a gutter Matt, 4 days! Fingers crossed, but mines been running for 4 years and returning 41 mgp @ 75. Can't complain! Let's   hope it goes for another 4!

At least you have the crusing cogs, I imagine having a 0.75 5th gear is almost like having a 6 speed box...!

What cog did you use in the other box? I can't remember.

Are you 100% sure, I've got a 16v box fitted to my 8v (with 8v clutch+flywheel)  :undecided:

yes 100% 16v box (and 2.0 8v MK3 GTI) need a bigger clutch friction disc. pressureplate and flywheel are the same though. either you had a 16v box before or the new box you fitted is actually an 8v box.

to the OP: either way check the code on whatever box you buy then double check with us on here so we can tell you which one it is. its also good practice to test fit the clutch friction disc to the spline on the gearbox before you try to fit it, just in case you have a missmatch
