Title: what engine should i go for?
Post by: iansabf on 04 October 2010, 21:34
Hi folks, i'm hoping to buy myself a golf tdi in the next week or 2. From all your experiences which engine would you all go for? I fancy the 150bhp but am concerned about expensive problems occuring, ive have heard they get problems with the cams? Is the 130bhp a better engine? Can anyone can give me any advice and what to look out for when viewing/testdriving them?

I was after a 130 when i was lookng but wasnt any around at the time within my budget, so went for the 115pd model and had it remapped to 150bhp, is still veryyy fun.

the 150 is fine never had any serious problems with mine all down to how it is looked after, plus a remap takes you into the 190 bhp's

Cams seem to be a weak point on the 150, I would pick a 130 but your choice.

buy a 150 which has already had the cams changed
mine went at around 105-110k and cost £900

Mine had FVWSH when I bought it and Ive only serviced it using VW oil.
Also seems to effect 02/52 plate 150's more and I have read on ukmivs of a couple 130's with the cam problems

My car is on 110,000 miles now when i bought it 5-6 years  ago it had 46,000 one owner. I personally have not had any cam problems and mine is a 52 plate. I had mine remapped at 86k still on the original clutch too.

I have had the odd problem but only things like wiper linkage, wiper motor, window regulator all the usual mk 4 issue's lol

I think the 150 is a great car if you look after it i service mine every 10k and replace anything that needs replacing straight away with geniune parts. I also always use Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40 which is expensive but i would say has helped prevent cam issues.

do the 150's and 130's have different turbos? if not, what takes the 150 to 190 bhp and the 130 to 170/180??

Another thing that never get mentioned is the spec.

150's are 1.8T GTI spec as opposed to the 130's being 2.slow spec.

So you'll get sports suspension and 16" wheels, 3 rear headrests and rear belts, dodgy wood trim, and in addition to the petrol GTI, a 4motion front vallance. You are also more likely to find a 150 speced with leather.

This might not mater if you are going to put wheels and suspension on it, as the other stuff you can probably do without, but a 150 is still a 150. It's a bit like going out in the 80's to buy an RS turbo, but ending up with an XR3i

We've got the ARL 150 tuned by me to 185bhp and touching 300lb/ft

We've had it 6 months now and apart from a service, CV boot and a brake hose - it's not needed anything mechanically.  It's a fantastic drive and returns great economy, and genuinely puts a lot of so called performance cars to shame.

The 150 has the front mounted intercooler and bigger turbo as well as better suspension and a few differences in trim etc.

I think you'd have a better selection of 130's as there's probably more available, but if you're looking for the best one you can buy and want to keep it, go find a decent 150.

I think if you went for the 130, you'd always wish you spent a bit more and got the 150.. well that's just me anyway :d
