Title: Massive Problem With my MK3 HELPPP PLEASE!!
Post by: imran92 on 04 October 2010, 12:59
okay, here it goes. i have got a mk3 1.4 engine code ABD, a mechanic has just put in another engine into the car (same engine code) because my original engine was completly f**ked! (head gasket and tappets), we have changed the spark plugs, rotor arm and distributor cap but the car cuts off as soon as i let go of the key, if i hold the key  right at the end of the ignition it stays on, however as soon as i let go the engine just dies!!

i've tried to explain as best as i can, and i really need help with this as i need it to get to uni this week!!

Thanks

imi

Sounds like the ignition switch could be faulty.

the mechanic said that it's the carb, but i'm a bit skeptic about that, i think thats the right word LOL

if the engine's cutting out as soon as i let go of the key, that would indicate a ignition problem :S

god i'm confused lol

Explain the whole situation to a different garage, and see what they say ...

It sounds like an ignition problem ...

When you turn the key to just before it cranks, are the lights on the dash?

Sounds like to me your ign. switch has died, I would be carefull holding on the key as that will be keeping the starter in which will in the end burn it out.

+1

Then you will have an ignition switch and starter to pay for!

My money is also in the ignition switch as i've had the same issue.

my golf's a 1992, so i don't think it has a ecu  :undecided:

and it doesnt have an alarm for an immobilizer, however, how can i do checks to see if i did have an immobilizer?

The problem is simple, the ign. switch is knackered, cannot see what else the problem can be if your having to hold the key.
