Title: oil temp sender?
Post by: jamiecoysh on 03 October 2010, 22:03
hi all im new here and was wondering if anyone could help me? i have a 1989 audi 80 sport with the 2.0 8v engine and have recently bourght the vdo gauges from ebay. I plugged them in and voltage gauge worked and but the oil pressure and temp gauge didnt work

i took the car to a friend who is nuts on v dub beetles n campers and sold me an oil pressure sender and wired it in for me, and now that works.

He said i needed to buy an oil temp sender and wire it in , well ive found an oil temp sender that is for a golf 2.0 8v engine so im assuming it will fit.

can anyone tell me in really lamen terms how to wire it in? ie connect one wire from here to there lol. The car is in litterally as new condition and dont want to damage it  any help would would be greatly apprieciated as no one can seem to help me on the audi site  and remember were all related through audi and v dub

ps . ill be using this site for my info from now on as you all could probably take my engine apart and put it back together again blind folded . cheers

And for making the gauge pod, this:

Hooking up the oil temp gauge is 1 wire, you *could* use the one from the MFA - but its resistance is slightly different and will give odd readings, when oil temp is really 100 degs - the gauge will show 130.

thanks alot for that , just quick i went to my local brakers and got what i thought was a temp sender from an e reg golf 1.8 gti. although this one didnt have any of the vdo gauges installed. In that link you gave me there is a pic of a new sender in the bag and that is blue in colour however this is white although they are both identical in dimentions. Is this the temp sender i have as there are no gauges in the car? and it was located right in the same place in the pic where the man has taken a pic of his existing setup.

I was thinking that this golf wouldnt have a sender there that didnt have the gauges

although i didnt know that golfs had a digital display in the console where the speedo is etc

can anyone just answer this quick cheers

The white one is the same as you already have - its for the MFA

so audis already have this white one on them

there is a blanking nut on my oil cooler where this white sender i have is located on the golf it came from

so i thought i had to undo this blanking nut from the oil cooler then bolt in this sender from the golf and then run a wire to gauge

am i right or am i over looking anything

cheeers

Top write up mate. Ive just got hold of a set of VDO guages, I just need to get hold of the sendors for my VR then I will be following your guide :)

I have just installed a set of VDO guages and they all work perfectly.

I am using the VDO duel terminal sender for the oil pressure and it reads fine on the guage. What I do have though is the oil buzzer going off constantly even though the lower pressure sender is still connected, and the high pressure is connected to one of the terminals on the duel sender.

Has any one had this at all? It all works great, bar this buzzer going off constantly and I cant seem to get rid!

Did you install the gauge in the right location? The 0.3 bar goes in the head, the other goes in the oil cooler. If you've fitted it in the wrong location, it would make sense the buzzer is going off.

take the pressure sensor off again and read the markings on the spanner flats, there are 0.3bar and 1.8bar versions make sure you have the right one. as ben says check where you fitted it too, the 1.8bar one goes on filter housign 0.3bar on side of head.

buzzer is controlled by 1.8bar switch, with a yellow wire. the most common vdo pressure sensor is the 0.3bar one, so if you had a 0.3bar one and fitted that in the filter housing with a yellow wire then that would explain your problem
