strange question for you.
how winey is your golf.
my new mk3 gti 8v is very winey when idling and when i rev.
my mate mk2 is the same
want to no how winey is your golf?
is it a normal golf thing?

Very, sounds like a supercharged engine
-
My power steering whines a bit but normally it's not bad.
-
Power steering pump whines, I think it's on it way out though. Sounds like the bearings as knackard.
-
Could be your cam belt tensioner
-
or one of the belts is too tight. you're looking for about 5mm deflection on the pas pump belt, alt belt is self tensioned so should be ok. timing belt you want about 90degree twist on an 8v, 45 degree on a 16v. some of the later 8v/16v mk3 have a self-tensioning cam belt tensioner though

hell ive had 6 mk3's and ALL of them had a whine from the PAS pump, its normal duder :)~
i like it it sounds differnt, bit like my ol' mk3 land rover!

Mine did not, if the pas pump is noisy then it is near the end of its life.
