Title: I BUY A NEW zorst today!
Post by: hotfive on 01 October 2010, 09:30
For my one week old 06 mk5 GTI. Its the first 'mod i'll be making and Ive got that Friday feeling and want to make a purchase on my lunch today!

So, a quick poll please - WHAT SHOULD I GO FOR??

Any help / advice please...? My mate works for a motorsport shop and has given me a few pointers but I want to know what the guys that know would go for!???

I've moved this as you'll probs get more response in here. Surely none of the mk5 mob will be in the garage section as that's just for the old Golfs !

Hurdy - what effect would a full exhaust system have on my pirelli without a remap?

Would there be any benefit from the sports cat or do you need a remap to get an effect?

Proberly make it rev alot free'er. Sound alot better, but wont give you any bhp gain.

Will excellerate alot smoother.

It won't really gain any power on its own but if you ever do decide to get a remap it will be even more beneficial.

a performance exhaust against a stock exhaust will give u a few more bhp on its own.

FTB Milltek is the way forward. Do a proper job of it.

Also you NEED a remap, should be illegal not to have one.

Happy modding

(dont forget to update your insurance)

I think I posted in wrong section...! Lack of replies meant I thought Id dig a bit deeper before taking the plunge..

I have a friend who works in a motorsport shop; they do parts for Audi, VW, Porsche... He's raced and has been in and around motorsport most of his life - I didnt ask his advice before because I thought he was just Porsche / high end stuff.

He says that inside the industry there are major problems with Milltek and that there are major quality problems with Milltek exhausts cracking? I dont know never used one, but he says that at the beginning of the year they started moving production overseas to china and the quality has just fallen off a cliff??? Im going to do a bit more research but for now I'm steering clear of Milltek - what other options are there??

APR's exhaust system is another good choice for the mk5.

I don't know how this works for you mk5 boys, but the older Golf mob seem to love this guy. http://www.pipewerx.com/index.html I forget his name, but he's pretty well known in VW circles. Might be worth a try and his work is supposed to be top notch.

I drive past this place every day on my way to work in Burscough - looks like a really pro place and he's always got some tasty machinery outside! His van is really cool too, a modded transporter.

One of the guys who works there has a silver MK5 GTI - if i get an exhaust fitted, it will be going to this place

Never heard of APR OR Pipewerx! thanks guys i'll check it out... Spoke to another guy yesterday who said about the Milltek cracking problems - apparently its a known issue? Any other choices whilst I check those two out?

Not heard much about Millteks cracking  :undecided:

I can comfortably say (I spend too much time here) there has never been a thread in this MK5 section complaining about their Milltek. Had my FTB system on for not far off 2 years now and its still good as gold. Id be really surprised and disappointed if Milly have actually lowered their high standards.

Go to www.dubforce.net/forums and do a search for pipewerx and you'll see quite a few threads on it. Should certainly help you make a decision. I think the guys name is Ian Birch and as I said earlier, he's well known and has a good reputation around the dub world.

Just had a little search on dubforce myself and this name also came up in Newcastle, so might be another one to add to the mix and someone on dubforce said they were cheaper than Pipewerx. http://www.aas-exhausts.co.uk/

Cheers Alan / Gibby

thanks for that guys as I say with the rumoured Milltek cracking probs I'm steering clear (until they start making them back in the UK again!).. the APR is now on my radar - done a bit of poking around on tyresmoke etc... What about Scorpion exhausts? Or mongoose?

I had nothing but good things to say about the Milltek I had on my 1.8T Leon Cupra. It made a dyno proven 4 bhp gain with no other mods, fitted, sounded and looked spot on.

However I have heard of a few diesels showing soot stains out of hairline cracks in recently fitted Millteks. Quite a few have had theirs replaced under warranty, which has solved the problem (for now) but the whole point of a stainless pipe is to fit it and forget it.

I don't think I would go for a custom pipe as an alternative. These are just made up from assorted pipes and boxes that are in stock. There is no development work other than the time spent making them fit nicely. There is no guarantee that they will work properly, and could even loose you power

Thats exactly what my guy said about the Milltek cracking issue. He said in fairness the company are good at replacing but that it shouldnt happen in the first place. I suppose they are forced to move production to China to compete on price, but if i'm upgrading a component for me it should at least not fail. What about Scorpion exhausts? British built as far as I know and looks like they are doing new stuff - see http://www.scorpion-exhausts.com/

I only know of people putting Millteks or Blueflames on their MK5s.

Cant really comment on any other brands.

Blueflame has went under ! they will be opening with a new company name hopefully.
The blueflame is a brilliant sysyem though.

Pipewerks seems to be pretty rated and as said miltek is a shout. Miltek have had some problems with the dp cracking although i do believe that they have sorted this issue. It was due to excessive engine movement so a lower mount should help prevent this anyhoo ! you will get a warranty with the milly anyway so if it does go pete tong they should replace it. Miltek seem to be very good on the customer service front too which is a bonus.

Blueflame back up I think..?

Seems lots of people are having problems with the Chinese Milltek Cracking issue, see:

http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/new-a3-s3-sportback-8p-chassis/107900-milltek-problem.html

Turns out a mate had exactly the same thing, says he took it to a garage who laughed and said:
"Oh Mill-crack, as we call them in the trade"...!!!!???
