Hi guys gonna fit a kent cam in my car at weekend, car done 134k miles, engine sounds quiet and runs well for car of its age, now would it be worth changing the cam followers at same time as fitting new cam? or are they best to be left alone if there working fine atm?

If it aint broke dont fix it! If the cam is scored on one of the pistons i would change that one :grin:

i was thinking that, but also thinking that the extra lift on the cam might nacker the old followers out so put new with new. but think prob easyer to leave them alone for now and if they start to play up change them then :)

They re easy to change with the cam out. They just pull out if you can get some grip on them.
What did you pay for the cam anyway?

Cam was £60 off a member on here, looks more or less new no ware. i can get cam followers for about £50 from work so not to much money and they ant cheap GSF ones

Keep thinking bout getting one but dont really want it to idle like a turd.

it shouldnt be to bad i hope, my mk2 1,6 driver i had a gti cam fitted and changed idle a bit but not to bad so im hopeing this wont change it to much, i was looking in to one of them ecu chips which supposibly smooth out idle and give 6-8bhp more as might help with cam upgrade

Yeah after any major cam/upgrade changes I would opt for ECU rolling road map, the last time I did one for a whole day and the chip cost me £400! Still have the chip just no G to run it LOL. worked out £100 per 10 BHP :laugh:

I had a 268 in my 8V and that was fine.
I'd recommend a new set of followers with a cam - the old ones will have developed habit.
I still have it, with only a couple of thousand miles on it.

well ill do the followers as not to bad for price.
as for the remapping ecu anyone know what the ones on ebay are like? there prob just the basic remap programmed to a spider chip?

I don't like the way they overfuel your car, how can a generic mapp give you better performance?
Not every car is the same nor mods so they play it safe, but its your risk after all if you go too lean on a rough mapp? I don't like static rolling road mapps either as they put a hair dryer on your intercooler for oxygen flow :wink:
You can spend £80 for an hour on the rollers to tune up or £350 to £500 on an actual road test (EPROM) on how YOU drive and HOW your car performs with load? :smiley: or buy a chip of Egay for £50 if you go for that, let me know how your MPG goes :grin:

will look in to finding some local places that remap with rolling roads. but might be worth a try on the ebay chips plug one in for few hundred miles see what difference it makes, but like u said they wont be matched up with the car and its mods

ebay chips have a nasty habbit of being offset maps.
so rather than giveing your engine more fuel where it needs it it just gets x% more everywhere.
if it's 8v on digi were talking about they are a bit of a pain to map as you ether need to do a lot of trial and correction with dataloging and each go means swaping eproms over or you need an emulator to twerk the map on then burn the chip when it right. most places problaly won't have the required emulator anymore.

Have seen ebay chips cause damage due to the fact they tend to get the car to run in cold start mode all the time.

Don't bother with off the shelf chips. A remap has to be matched to the mods you have, otherwise you risk running too lean/rich and causing damage. I've had a bad experience with a chip and it resulted in spending £80 on a new ECU, so if I was you I'd save my pennies and get a proper remap from R-tech, Revo and the like.
As for camshaft, what did you go for? I heard a myth that mk2 heads couldn't take too much lift as the lobes would interfere with the tappet seat. However I heard this myth for the mk3 heads and I ran a cam with 11.52" lift and it was no problem. Here is the fitting guide I did.

Had it fitted and wow the car flys, as for idle its fine to be honest the mechanic who fitted it timed car by ear and to be honest i had my driver camed with a gti cam, and this runs much smoother
i fitted a Kent GS1H, Changed the cam followers and the cam belt + waterpump, had to get a dizzy from scrap yard last min as when timing it died, so rushed around on a sat afternoon to find new one which ant easy lol.
car idles between 1000-15000, i can take vid of car running so ppl can see how it idles with highlift cam if anyone intrested

ill try get one sorted asap then ill do one on cold start, one think i noticed when driving it yesterday is when slowing down had a tiny bit of judder but not really noticable, does run smoother that i thought it would, the test will be sat in traffic tomorrow morning on way to work.

In answer to the original question, i would change the tappets when putting a new cam in.
The old tappets will be worn in to the old cam.
