Title: mk1 clipper cab running probs
Post by: robiwill on 30 September 2010, 11:25
Hi guys turning to you for help as it is doing my and Steve's head in

got a clipper 1.8 carb model

engine been rebuilt all timming correct etc
new webber carb fitted
replacement fuel filler neck

when cold starts fine a bit hessatant but runs
when it has been driven for about 20 minutes it loses power and you have no revs and then stalls. will start again but will not drive in any gear above 2 untill it cools down

It was the same before the engine was rebuilt just it rattled hence the rebuild.

any ideas as the car is really doing my head in

Had a simular issue the only thing that worked was to change out the fuel tank apperently there was loads of rubbish sitting in the swirl pot where the fuel was getting sucked from and restricted the fuel flow into the fuel pump & pipes.
The symptoms are like fuel starvation or kangaroo first notice it on mine but the sign of a rusty fuel neck was bang on the money!

Might help i had an old mk 1 xr2 same problem tried everthing then a mate of mine an old school mechanic told me to get a flexy petrol cap drill a small hole in it and run it. tank was pressurising and starving carb of fuel dont know if that will help but it cured mine. it was just coincidence it stalled at temp cos the pressure built up as it was running.

My Mk2 had this problem once. I would go funny and eventually stall when warm. Cooled down again it would run for a while. I had to stop every 20 minutes to let it cool down. It was very worrying.

The garage cleaned the carburettor jets and the problem was solved.

Another thought: Have you checked all the breather pipes?
