Title: Replacing front suspension mounts on TDi
Post by: strega on 29 September 2010, 11:36
Hi all,
Bit of a novice so go easy on me. I am trying to learn how to do things myself so I would like some advice on how to replace my top suspension mounts on my mk3 TDi. I understand it easy to do but anythings easy when you know how. I know I need coil clamps but what else is needed and how long does the process take? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Should take about an hour a side really Mate if you have never done it. Basically wheel off and axle stand underneath. Then undo the not at the top of the mount/strut with either an allen key and deep ring spanner or use an air tool or impact gun. Then unclip all the brake hoses. Undo and remove the two nuts and bolts at the bottom of the strut. The whole strut will then come away from the car. Then use the spring compressors on the spring and there is another nut holding the top mounts and bearings on. Remember which way they come off and then just replace the top mounts and nut and then undo the spring compressors and refit the strut to the car. Not a hard job really Mate even if you have never done it.

Just one further question, are there different types of mounts, would say a gti mount be an up-grade for the tdi etc, thanks again

You wouldn't notice a difference in handling if you replaced TDI mounts with GTI mounts.

I'm not even sure if they're the same... TDI engines are heavier, so I think the suspension in different entirely.

Might be wrong though.

The top mounts would probably be the same but GTI shockers would not take the extra weight of the TDI engine.
