Ok as some of you no iv just got myslef a nice mk3 golf gti 8v. Well have a problem that's bugging me. I.only drive the car to and from work and it sits in my garage at night. Every morning when I get the car out the garage the temp light is flashing so I top up water and its fine but same again every morning.
Any ideas?

Forgot to add the car seems to have a brand new shiney water pump.

Why are you having to top up water every day? And how much?
You need to sort this right away!
If there are no water leaks then it will probably be the headgasket!

Defo check for leaks first Mate....a common problem on Mark 3's as I found out recently is the ECU Temp Sensor housing warps and leaks but you would see this as it's right at the front of the engine block. I also had a leak in the metal water pipe. Just check everything first Mate. Easiest way is to warm up the engine until the fan kicks in and then switch it off and get under the bonnet. Good Luck

Cheers I'm gona have a good look today wen I get home from work after a drive. Iv not realy had a chance to check yet for leaks. Wanted to see if there is any most comon places to look first

Obviously just keep an eye on the temp guage as you drive. If it goes up it advisable to pull over but removing the header tank cap would also relieve some of the pressure as a very short term solution. Has it been overheating at all ??

heater matrix? look for dampness on the passenger carpet and tunnel

No overheating. No damp floor. No creamy oil. Just every morning after a long night in garage the temp/water light comes on making me thing its leaking over night hopefully meaning water leak. Every time iv gone to check it over its bloody rained.
It does have a brand new water pump must be few weeks old so maybe not fitted proply or sumit

If its in the dry in a garage surely you can see any puddles of water under the car?

Its a rented council garage with a dirty oily floor. It just had a good look around it and no leaks. Every pipe under the bonnet is brand new.
Have noticed sumit tho when I have topped up car before well once. I couldn't see the water level as the bottle was to white. But this morning when the light came on I put more than I put in day before and sudenly I could see the level on the bottle.
Drove home and it aint moved.
The car had new water pump and all new pipe not long ago then sat on his drive. Thinking that maybe it hasn't been driven a lot since so all coolant hasn't settled and gone throgh all heater and everything. Maybe that long drive home in the car when I bought it was needed to get it all round.
Its now just a matter of seeing it in the morning again

Ok yes the water level has dropped this morning and yes there is water on the floor under where the engine was. This is doin my head in now it leaks water at night in garage but not at work car park in the day wtf?
