Hey all, I recently had the clutch replaced on the golf, since then it has had an intermittent starting problem. Basically, you turn the key and all that happens is a click, one single click. For the first few days if I held the key in the turned position for a second or two it would fire up, then after this the car started normally every time for a couple of weeks but then today it started doing the 'click' thing again. Ive driven the car normally all day, work and back, to the chippy etc, until an hour ago when it wouldnt fire up at all. Turn the key, get a click, it sounds as if the fuel pump is priming(?!) when the key is held in the turned position but nothing else. Im sure this has been covered before but I can't really find the answer using the search function. Any help greatly appreciated.
Oh, forgot to say - the car bump started easily. Cheers.
Also, the battery is fine and 'twitting' the starter motor doesnt seem to help!

sounds to me like theres a loose earth strap sum where
-
+1 yeah sounds like you need to check the main earth strap on the gearbox if the clutch was not long done id have a look at that usually its bolted onto one of the main gear box bolts at the top of the box near to the starter motor or even have a look at the starter motor make sure all those connections are good aswell hope you sort it
oh and check the earth to the coil pack cant remember if i had to unscrew mine when i done my clutch a few weeks ago

When I had my clutch changed the guy forgot to reconnect the earth lead. I took it back out of principle to show the guy. Yours will be the same problem Mate.

Cheers for the help guys, I'll have a look later. Does this mean that it would have been starting ok for the last week or 2?

Could just be loose or something along those lines Mate

Just had the AA out, was a loose connection on the starter motor! He was there for about 20 secs and had it working again. I could probably have figured that out myself but it was raining  Cheers for the help anyway! I love it when a fix doesnt cost anything!
