The paint finish is fine apart from the engine compartment, here is the reply from my dealer today

I have already done some research into this and don't panic there are a few different under bonnet colours, dependant on the exterior colour. Dark cars tend to have grey, whereas red and white have red and white.

If you check it will be a matt effect grey because you can't have a metallic paint effect under the bonnet due to heat issues. (ie) heat will reflect off a metallic and not a matt.

mmmmm :undecided:

Snoopy will really love such a response.
I simply cannot believe this garbage either from your dealer.
So why is the boot area, behind the wings, door crevices etc also matt grey? Heat issues? Pah.

Anyway, welcome to the forum and enjoy the car.

Check the link in my sig for what myself and others have posted before on the paint colours under the bonnet, wheel arches and boot.

I have seen Snoopys issues before, and yes there are parts of the car that Mr robot has missed( or should i say VW didnt want to waste paint on, on my car aswell.

What  i was suprised at was the engine bay and under bonnet have actually been sprayed properly in a different colour i.e Grey Gloss.

Is this a change from just relying on the overspray theory i wonder ?

I havent been able to check any Week 35 on build cars as yet to compare, but i am sure all deep blacks will be the same!!

The lame excuses from VW to justify their penny pinching antics simply belittles them convincingly.

If I had had any inkling of this painting issue and some other ones, I would have bought something else.

Off topic but only slightly:
At present, the bodyshop has had two goes trying to match the rear bumper paint to the rest of the car body on my car. (A warranty issue of great unpleasantness which is still ongoing after four tiresome months). They are having a third go today. It simply beggars belief.

Wow, cant believe what i'm reading. How on earth can they justify this poor workmanship. Do all the colours suffer from paintless door pillars/arches/boots. When did this practice start? From the Mk5 or is it just the Mk6

Hi Moe:

Don't know anything about the Mk5 Golfs, but it seems all Mk6 Golfs have these 'lack of paint coverage' issues.

My red car is deep pink in the boot area! Sweet!

There were no paint issues with the MK5.VW modified the way the MK6 was made to save money and have dropped the ball somewhere along the lines as its a bit of a reoccurring problem on the MK6.

My mk6 is painted exactly the same way as my mk5 was, i don't really see a problem with not having top coat colour in areas that are not seen, ie under boot carpet, inside wings etc. That said there are exeptions and snoopy is a prime example as the lack of body colour paint can be seen quite easily, imo as long as there are no issues with corrosion then i'm not too worried.

Oh yeah, Im not saying that they are all crap. Just some of them seem to have some quality control points.

The 'don't ask, don't tell', 'where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise', and other such attitutes are the prime causes that quality has suffered so badly in this frenetic consumer driven ignorant society.

I'm with am1w on this one, you guys have handed over some serious cash. Just because VW release them from the factory this way doesn't make it right. What next, orange peel on the paintwork to save on the thickness of the paint.

I don't understand the problem either, my sister in laws BMW isn't painted in the boot floor, why would they.
Title: Re: New GTI
Post by: am1w on 29 September 2010, 21:27
I actually had a good root around some Mk5 GTis and was impressed with the quality of the paint finish and did not notice any lack of paint coverage on internal panels. It was one of the reasons I chose a Mk6 GTi! Thus, no paint issues that now seem to be a Mk6 norm. Thus, no nasty surprise as with the Mk6.

I think VW have been very clever by improving the touch-feely internals to give the car a perceived and possible improvement in quality and solidity. There had to be a cut-back somewhere, so they used less paint on parts that Average Joe would never really be inquisitive enough to see!

Oh well, one lives and learns!

Still love the car to bits!!!!
Title: Re: New GTI
Post by: AlanD on 29 September 2010, 22:05
The whole reason for bringing the MK6 out early was because the MK6 is considerably cheaper to manufacture than the MK5, the MK5 was costing them too much to make.

Erm I think it was build week 28 ordered 23rd May 2009 and collected 29th July 2009.  Best car I've ever had, I know many of you are having problems with this that and the other but apart from a small rattle in the drivers door which has now corrected itself I can honestly say that the car has been perfect.  And with the addition of the rear view camera and the RNS510 and of course the rear LEDs can see me keeping the car for quite some time.

Helloooo Amanda.

Getting Wolgang back tomorrow morning with a perfect new rear. Took the bodyshop 1.5 weeks and 3 goes! Beggars belief! Cannot wait to get out of the Pug 107. I have run out of brown paper bags which I covered my head with whilst driving that thing!

I love my GTi but certain things niggle. True for every car, I suppose. It is a wonderful car in most ways.

PS: Fitting the sub-woofer on Monday, definitely and at last.

I beg to differ. EVERY mk5 i have seen suffers the wing to a-pillar paint to the edge issue just it shows up more on some more than others due to colour and the gap in this location due to variences in the build process. I checked all the mk5s at 4 local dealers over about a 3 month period when i noticed this on the mk6 i ahve also looked at nearlt every mk5 i have seen (amazed ive not been arrested yet!)
I have seen behind the seens of a mk5 that was also stripped for parts at a mates garage.  This process started in 2004 and the mk5.

One of the many reasons I did not order leather. I think the Jacara Cloth looks unique, more comfortable and the heating of the seats works 3 times more quickly. But that's is my taste.

You have a beautiful car. Enjoy it.

There use to be small print in the price list and broucher that said something like only the parts in touch with you were real leather, the rest was fake leather, maybe they have changed the fake stuff to cloth now.
