Hello,
I went to turn my lights on this morning and i had no dash lights. Not good with the mornings getting dark. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be.
Cheers

There is a dimmer doofler just above where the headlight switch is, you havent caught that have you?
-
i take it youve tried turning the little dimmer wheel.?

 great minds think alike!
-
Ha ha, if its not that its worth popping out the light switch and dimmer jobbie and make sure there arent any loose connections
-
Thats the first thing i looked at, and no loose connections. Does anyone know where i can get a new light switch.
-
VW sell em, duno how much. Or you could just go to the scrappies and get one of any mk2
-
Don't take 1 off any mk2, there's at least 2 different types. (Early and late I guess). A mate put a late one on his early mk2, it livened up an earth and nearly burnt his car down... Trust me on this 1!!
-
sh!te, sorry. Always forget about the ghay electrical swap thats only identifyable by the hazzards.
-
I thought the headlight switches were the same?
Know about the different stalks etc...

Nah they are different, i read about it when my mate had the same problem but he got the right switch so we didnt think anything of it

Seems you could be right... ETKA has the same part number just a different Suffex letter...
191941531H - 88 Model
191941531K - 91 Model
There are different ones for different countries like Sweden who have to have lights on all the time...
Will have a look at my 2 cars tomorrow... Not that I don't believe you just out of curiosity as I sold a swith on ebay last week (0.99p) and didn't know there were 2 versions...

I hate German engineering why not stick to one and make it easy.

Ha ha, as stated, there will be a reason for it. Even though it may seem like it sometimes, they don't go through all the effort of changing something that's being produced 1000s of times for no reason
-
later ones have extra features etc.
check the number of pins on the hl plug, and get a switch with the same number. at least 3 different uk spec switches that i know of over the years. are all the dash lights out, or just the clocks? do your number plate lights work?
-
only the light over the speedo works on mine the one for the rev counter doesnt work, have asked and have been told its a bloody fiddly job to replce the bulbs themselfs but need to sort this out soon as with it gettign darker it does make it hard to see how much fuel i have left!!
-
check out mk2 maintenance section, clock bulb change covered there. not really difficult

Yeah its a bit moody vw changing them, they both interchange from early to late, my mate pinched one out my engine donor car 4 his n had the fire. Serves him right 4 not askin! The switch/plug has more pins on 1 than the other, the germans shoulda thought of that and keyed the switch/ changed the pin layout altogether so it couldn't happen.. Its claimed the lives of a few mk2's now...

right if plate lights no worky this means the power output from the switch is at fault, or the wire or fuse. you did check the fuse yes? also look in the rubber grommets between the body and the tailgate, and inside the boot at the lights themselves. if the wires are shorting there it could be blowing your fuse every time you switch the lights on.
where is your hazard switch, dash or column?
-
hazard switch is on the dash. I did change the fuse
I will check out the wires I did not think about that.
Cheers for your help.
-
right, number plate lights and dash lights are fed from fuse #20, check it again in case its blown since you replaced it. if it has, look for shorts in the wiring in the tailgate, as i say in particular at the rubber boots between the tailgate and body. the fuse gets power from pin 58 on the headlight switch, which is a grey/green wire. pin 58 on the switch runs to pin B27 on the back of the fusebox, whicvh then loops to B26 and finally A24, make sure all these wires are intact, A24 is where the power for the number plate lights and the dash lights comes from, so if either of these looped wires are dmagaed no power will get thru.

dont mean to hijack the thread but just curious. i put in new bulbs for my dash lights and the darn things wont illuminate. ive turned them every which way. any suggestions to get those things in properly so they work?
-
With mine, the dash only lights up [visibly] if it's pretty much pitch black out side.
In the mornings when I have my lights on and the sun's coming up I can't see the dash is illuminated, I thought it was just weak lighting!
Not good, especially when it's early and as the dash isn't lit up I forget about the lights! :lipsrsealed: :embarassed:

have you checked to see if your number plate lights are working too .
i chased mine for hours, searched on here, wham, number plates out, fuse changed for them, dash lights came on :lipsrsealed:

thats the thing.. everything works fine except that one bulb on the right side of the dash... i mean i can drive without it but i would like to be able to see my rpms and gasoline guage at night if possible haha.. im in right there with you mitching. when its early you can barely see the dash lights at all. i often forget to turn my lights off as well. def NOT A GOOD THING HAHA
