Title: Ipod doesn't function correctly with RNS510
Post by: MAW73 on 27 September 2010, 13:21
This has been bugging me a while. As per the pictures below, my Ipod is connected the RNS510 through the AUX in. However no track names are displayed on the head unit and I can't change tracks etc on the touch screen? Is this the norm? At the moment I just change tracks and albums on the ipod.

I've tried resetting the Ipod but no joy. Any ideas?

Yes that's normal. If you want to control the iPod over the RNS you need the MEDIA-IN.

Just checked on volkswagen.co.uk, it's called Multi-Device Interface (MDI). You can connect iPod, iPhone, USB-Sticks and other stuff to the RNS.
This is the factory solution:

Yes you can retrofit it, but for the solution like in the picture above you have to remove the CD-Changer.

There is a retrofit-kit from VW with a cable that you put in the glovebox. Same function and you can keep the CD-Changer.

I can post the part numbers today evening.

Do you not have the ipod connector in the armrest Martin? Should be standard fit in the GTI, but it's not unknown for them to go missing before the car is delivered. You can buy new ones from VW.

^^^ Thanks all for the replies.

Under my armrest is a 6 Disk Autochanger which you can just about see in the photo. I guess here in lies the problem as there is no IPod connection present or MEDIA-IN interface  I'd rather have this than an Autochanger tbo as I don't really play CD's in the car. Oh well that's annoying really but I brought the car X-Demo and therefore that's how it came.

Wow that was quick....... Thanks for the info. I would have thought the MDI install could go in the glove box and I could keep the use if the CD changer in the armrest? I look forward to hearing from you later with regard to this..... thanks again.

Bear in mind that the MDI is far from flawless. Navigating through songs is painfully slow, there is no search feature and you don't seem to get gapless playback on an iPod like you will be doing through the aux input.

I know this might sound stupid but I will ask it anyway.

Does your headunit also have a built-in CD changer or is this used for the navigation part of the headunit? (I don't know if the navigation uses a disc or if it is all on a hard drive)

I have the RCD510 with MDI for my iPod and I can also put 6 CDs into the front of the headunit.

The VW iPod interface is a lot better than anything else I have seen. I used to have an Alpine headunit which was expensive but I had to scroll through each artist to get to the end of the alphabet. (No ZZ Top for a while!) In the VW setup, you can jump straight to any artist in your library.

The head unit primarily is used for the DVD map, however it can also be used to play a single CD or a DVD which is pretty cool. Was watching Soprano's in the car earlier whilst I was early for a meeting. I love the Soprano's, the best TV drama ever imo. Totally addictive watching.
