GUYS NEED HELP PLEASE.
Just in the middle of changing the oil on the golf oil out but the sump plug wont tighten looks like the threads are coming to bits !
I need the car to get to work in the morning I have a tube of universal blue gasket and joint compound will this work .
or any other ideas as cant get a new sump plug locally today
-
as a short term fix, try puttin 2 washers on the plug and see if it tightens.
id be worried about using any gasket seal on the plug, it will most likely leak if theres no 'bite' on the threads
-
sh!t, I feel for you mate. Not sure what else to do apart from a new plug, or even with the use of a helicoil, but as you say, you can't get anything today. Eeeek :undecided:
-
dont think you've got any option but to leave the car at home cos if the plug comes out while driving that'l be it  is it the thread on the plug or sump that breaking up?
-
need to re tap the hole in sump and put a standard new bolt in there is no over option other than heli coil..
-
most likely id say the thread is stripping off the sump, you could always drill it bigger and tap it for a larger bolt.
are the sumps aluminium? helicoils arent that good on alloy, we were using them at work on the gearboxes (notorious for the oil pipe to strip the threads on a voith gearbox) and the coils were coming loose, quite surprising especially for how tight and sealed they were in there
-
i would drill and tap for larger bolt if its the sump thats threaded
-
it looks like the end threads on the sump plug are stripped im talking about the end near the washer cleaned the plug up its going in quite tight but still got a drip
-
what size socket fits the oil filter housing
-
have you tried fitting 2 washers like i said earlier?
-
hi mate yes but it still had a drip so I have taken all the oil out again till I get a new plug tomorrow so its the train to work ' 6am
-
Always use a new sump plug when you change the oil. For the sake of about a quid with a new washer its not worth the hassle. Been there, done it so I know what its like pal! Hope you get it sorted ok.

Can it not be helicoiled or tapped out and a bigger bolt used maybe.
-
you are a fool if you pay £240 for a new sump when you can just remove old one re-tap hole bigger get a new bolt and a copper washer problem solved for under a fiver...
-
just retap it mate, its easy enough to do, just dont over tighten it once its done :lipsrsealed:
-
the vag specialist says he has tried it before and its too much hassle
well it will be for him if its my money wont he

It's no hassle to do though. If you lived anywhere near me, I'd do it for you for a beer.
