Title: Best bulbs?
Post by: Exonian on 26 September 2010, 16:09
I know this has been done before, but winter is coming (and I can't find the old threads), the nights are drawing in and the standard lights are crap.
I've not driven the car really since August bank holiday (so may well get shot of it soon), but I did notice that coming back home down some unfamiliar country roads that the lights are awful on dipped beam.
I've no idea how much Asker and Kenny are paying for their retro-fitted Xenons but I bet it's out of my budget! So basically who'd fitted what bulbs to their GTI with normal halogen lights?
Recommendations and links would be great and I'm sure would help others out too.
TIA

Exonian:

We don't know how much as yet as we are waiting for SteveP. But it is in the region of £800.
Spoke to Kenny today. We are both kicking ourselves for not factory ordering them.

Don't know much about the bulbs though. I think Steve30 has looked into this.

Sorry can't be of much help.

Thanks Asker.
And £800ish isn't too bad really, especially for some nice black R ones

Found this as well for you Andy....

I'm in the same boat, I would like to upgrade my standard bulbs with something a little more wizz bang! So you might sell the GTI then? What are you thinking of replacing it with?

Ah, cheers Martin. That's the thread I remembered and for some reason couldn't find. Ta.
Thinking of getting rid of both my GTI which isn't being used and my old Ibiza GTI which is (lots) and either going into company car scheme (which I don't have details on yet) involving me sort of leasing a Blue Motion or Ecomotive or just buying one newish car that I'd actually use, having my eye on an Ibiza SC FR 2.0 TDI. Even though I could really do with a 5 door car I can't stand the looks of the 5 door Ibiza!
Seems such a waste of having £20k worth of GTI sat there being used perhaps once or twice a month. Mind you I do look forward to those couple of days a month!

What a pity you will be selling your car.
But I perfectly understand that such low usage does not make sense for keeping a £20k+.
It will be snapped up especially as it is such a beauty and in perfect condition.
A Golf Match is a very sensible choice ...in Shadow Blue?
But please keep posting on this Forum.

No Andy don't do it...!! No Serioulsy I can fully understand your reasons if you do end up selling it. Why not opt for the Leon FR instead? A better shape than the Ibiza + with 5 doors. I really like the Leon's. Yep keep posting if you do end up selling so we can convert you back over to a GTI at some point

Andy can you not convert your ownership into a company lease by selling your GTi to a lease company? I think it has been done before. There are leasing companies that do this.

I bought the Philips X-Treme Power from This Seller on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PHILIPS-X-TREME-POWER-H7-EXTREME-XTREME-HEADLIGHT-BULBS-/230530919771?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item35acb6ad5b)

Found them to a big improvement and only £20..

Thanks for the comments. No decisions made yet.
The scheme they are bringing into my work is that you must have a very low emissions car and there are only a few options you can pick from. So I may save myself the misery by sticking with owning my own car.
I like the Leon Martin, a good friend of mine works for a big leasing company and gets to drive lots of cars, his favourite is the Leon FR TDI. I previously owned an old shape Leon Cupra. Excellent car.
But the Ibiza would be a better size for the city driving I do, I find the Golf very bullky round town hence using my old Ibiza GTI all the time. The newer Ibiza is a bit bigger than the old but still about a foot shorter than the Golf. So that gives me more space to fill my garage up with junk too!
I like the new Ibiza 3 doors, not so keen on the boy racer-ish Cupra/Bocanegra, and the small light bodyshell is perfect for a brawny (remapped) 2.0 TDI.

I bought the Philips X-Treme Power from This Seller on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PHILIPS-X-TREME-POWER-H7-EXTREME-XTREME-HEADLIGHT-BULBS-/230530919771?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item35acb6ad5b)

Thanks Mike, just the ticket.
