Have you had that feeling just before you fire up a car that hasn't for two years?
All was going well before the starter motor gave up and picked up a nice new one this afternoon.
Bolted it on and gave it a start up.
Cranked over but no fire up.
Scratching my head I started checking spark all was present on all cylinders and quite a health spark!
Then smelt the fuel and thought there wasn't enough, as I only stuck £5.00 of V power into it, so stuck another £6.00 just in case. No fire up.
I noticed the firing order was just wrong so took the dizzy cap off and reset all the HT leads to correct firing positions (1342) it started to turn over again, but soon as it started it stalled pretty much right away.
Still I was not going to get beaten by her! Checked the plugs loads of fuel in the chamber, and fueling was definitly not an issue.
Then started to check vacume pipes, plugs and guess what the over run grey thingy was sitting off and not properly on the rubber metering pipe. So stuck it on and fired it up
BRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrroooooooooooom!
Nice cloud of smoke (white) tapitap until the oil started to move and then the high idle settled down to a nice purrrrr after 10 minutes! No blue smoke, no more tapits sound just pure engine purr tickover. Blipt the throttle it stayed high longer than I wanted and think the throttle body had some gunk.
But what a high to hear, smell and see the engine run after two years!
All pulleys runing well alternator seemed a bit loose so tightened it up added more distilled water to the expansion tank. Added more PAS fluid and all is good!
I let the rad get up to temps and turned it off as the fan is not on yet. But I'm feeling really happy that the engine is a good one which I knew it would be, as I stripped it before hand and the valves were like spanking brand new with no carbon.

I know the feeling - I laid up My Audi S2 for 6 Years... Dragged her out of the garage & blew up the tyres and charged the battery and she sparked up first turn.... Don't you just love VAG Cars.... (At Times :grin:)

Thanks guys Its been a while since I've messed about with K jet systems and yeah its a ball ache, but hey its all good!
Now it fires up I can change the oil and filter.
There is the interior still to be rebuilt, boot carpet and cleaned.
A few exhaust hanging bungs and a few heat shields circular securing brackets.
All the bay cable ties and clips to go back on.
Slam pannel, grill, rad fan, bumper, splitter, and lights to be hooked up.
Still loads to do, but at least the heart of the beast is up and running!

just put my 1990 Mk2 back on the road aftr 3 years of SORN. Battery was shot, but it jumpstarted first time...Frankenstein had the right idea

I've always taken the battery out every couple of month, stick it on trickle charge, due to alarms being the drain point!

Nice one!. had the same... engine was out of the car for 6 years!.. took me two weeks to start, tuned out the clifford was the cause (last thing i checked!).. ripped it all out, did a quick leccy bodge and boom! off she went. have since rewired the car. :cool: when you gonna try for MOT.. mines gonna be this month me thinks, they may laugh at me?? :undecided:

I'm sure yours will pass with flying colours fella!
I'm going for MOT @ end of October I need to buy a few more brake parts before taking her through.
Good news most of the front is on and just rewired the lights and all are working ok except side lights it looks like the bulbs I had on them were too old.
Checked the Alternator voltage it was 14.6V and battery gave off a health voltage.
Drained oil and flushed the engine, then a new oil filter plus synta, you can see the new starter motor aswell. :smiley:
But here is the latest look on her?
I'm not doing the front bumper because its so low I need the space just to get a bloody jack underneath for future upgrades! :grin:

I know the feeling there is about another £300.00 to be spent on this, like brakes discs and pads even a new Rad and shroud, Front drivers plastic wheel arch to be replaced. Number plates! Couple of tyres, One fog lense, I'm sure if this fails the MOT it would have been something silly that I forgot somewhere. But this was the task I faced when I started to strip it back.
NO PAS system, Missing vac pipes,Servo and master cylinder shot, faulty starter motor, Alternator faulty. Pretty much all important ancillaries all shot due to neglect. Major oil leek around rocker cover. It had a green bonnet aswell :laugh:
The only thing decent was the head and bottom end.
