Does anyone know what the rubber tube is that runs from the front of the engine to the top left corner?
I've attached a pic. it might seem like a total novice question but it looks like mine has split at some point and someones fixed it with tape
Can anyone point me in the direction of the idle control vale 2 plz, i want to clean mine.

Unless it's a 2E engine or ABF (16v) it won't have an idle control valve, the idle is adjusted electronically. The pipe I think you are on about is the air intake pipe (do you mean from the airbox to the throttle body? Airbox being the black box on the bottom left).

no its an 8v engine, the hose is the same place as the 1 in the pic with the blue cable tie on it, on the front of the engine starting behind the dipstick

Right, so yours won't have an idle control valve. That pipe is VERY known for splitting, it's the oil breather pipe and with age and use they go brittle. The best way to fix is it buying a new pipe (A VW Dealer will rape you for it though), or buy an used one without any cracks or breakages from ebay/scrapyard/forum. As I said, they are very common for breaking and leaking so be weary (also when fitting a new one as it can break easily). Them broken can affect our idle, it may be rough and the cabin may smell of hot engine oil if the leak is large.
