hi,
is this how a/your gti should be sounding? if it is, bring back the mk2 gti!

(think i have put the video right

No! Sounds like an old tractor. I think some cars have had issues with the cam chain tensioner. The GTI engine has a belt on the left hand side and a chain internally on the right hand side.
Are you under warranty?
-
I was wary of the sound when i purchased it, I am not in warranty, It bacame a concern when people kept asking me if it was a diesel! i posted some messages on here and response was that the fsi sound like a diesel, surely not this bad eh?
what are my options? do you think its got anything to do with tapets? i remember on the mk2 16v the tapets use to make noise, i use to put in a can of something in the oil, which took away the noise, could i try this again on this engine?
-
I vagely remember something about the newer FSI engines sounding like diesels on idle due to their direct injection system.
-
what fuel do you put in it mate?

Yup

Not like that though! They sound a bit ticky but thats extreme. They sound a bit like a diesel - not like a diesel!
-
That sounds abit like a front pipe chuffing. Are you sure your exhaust is not leaking?
-
How old is car?
How many miles?
-
I always use the premium V power petrol from shell
The car has done 43k and I am the 2nd owner
The exhaust seems nice,no leaks or blows.
If i was to replace the belt and tensioner, would it take the noise away? or is there anything else i should try before forking out that sort of money.

........had to have this replaced on mine.
-
Mine is similar mileage, always had V power and just had cam belt and tensioners done and it sounds exactly like yours.
Actually seems to have got worse since this was done !! No other issues, performance is rock solid and fuel consumption best ever over lifetime.
-
Don't confuse the cam belt with the cam CHAIN. Its dicky chains / chain tensioners that makes them sound like diesels, not the belts. There is another issue which seems to affect mostly ED30's which results in needing a new BELT and tensioner, but the symptom is a squeek when cold.
From what others have reported, it sounds very much like you have the dodgy chain / tensioner issue.
-
sounds exactly the same as mine, had it nearly 3 years now and it completely does my head in!!!!! its fine when the engines cold but once it warms up idle and speeds below 25mph are just annoying and slightly embrassing  mines a may 2005 gti only 41k

..........is your's on the AXX engine code ?. Mine was & it was the small cam chain & tensioner.Cam belt had been replaced.
-
That's a horrible sounding engine. These anniversary models seem to suffer more faults than normal. Perhaps they are thrashed at higher revs than the normal GTI (the bigger turbocharger in the Edition 30 needs a fistfull more revs to start blowing).

Its not an ED30 you muppet.

yep its the AXX engine code, did yours sound normal again after the small cam chain & tensioner was changed? had my cambelt and water pump changed earlier in the year
-
Oh dear, my 06 GTI sounds just like this!! I think I'll be booking mine into get fully serviced by VW while they have fixed price offer on.

Whats this fixed price offer? i ain't seen anything, been getting quotes for the cambelt kit and water pump, got quotes ranging from £399 to £750!
I want to be sure its the cambelt and that the sound will go away once i get it changed, i may even put it though a full service, as the last one was done in April 2010...
anyone know of a decent and reasonable priced deal for service/cambelt within London M25?

.........sounds miles better now mate.Still get a slight ticking but this is the direct injection. Before it was replaced you could hear the diesel type rattle on tick over inside at traffic light etc. Nice & quiet now when sat at lights .

Check out the VW site, they have a fixed price full service offer on, http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners/servicing/fixed-price-servicing

A new belt won't help the diesel noise. New CHAIN will though.
-
Thank you VERY much for this, its what i wanted to know....
its the chain on the right.... so when they say cambelt kit change - this does not include the chain? or does it?
-
No. Its not supposed to be a servicable part so there is no replacement schedule for it.
You will need a new belt as well if your car has done 60k or is 4 years old.

Hmeah, did you get get that sound sorted out/ ? Cheers
-
mine sounds the same but cant really hear it with the bonnet shut, bwa engine.
-
never got the sound sorted, learnt to live with it and take the diesel abuse from friends and family,
just seen another post 'cured noise' the gentleman spend over 800 pounds to fix the rattle!
-
wtf!? No that doesnt sound right at all.
