Title: Fitting front intercooler?
Post by: nicksource on 24 September 2010, 11:38
Has anyone fitted a front intercooler to a MK3?

Just wanting to know the best way of fitting one, any tips/guide?

Ideally wanting it like this: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3559/3480608410_5068ea0cf3_b.jpg

Cheers,
Nick.

have you got a turbo?

Edit: You have a TDI, but I doubt it runs enough boost to need a big intercooler.

Not needed on your tdi really.

Im sure i read that if you have a giant intercooler for a small boost set up you can potentially loose power.

This is a good forum to ask about diesel tuning:

Do note that there is a pressure loss as the air passes through the intercooler, the bigger the intercooler the bigger the loss, so if you are installing a front mounted intercooler you would want to have the car remapped/chipped, uprated pump, etc so you are pushing enough boost to make it worthwhile. A decent mid-term upgrade can be a mk4 GTI side mount intercooler as I think this is slightly larger than the standard TDI one.

Cheers Jimp though there isn't many MK3 owners there.

My question was on fitting it, not about if I needed one... I plan to upgrade the turbo in the future so will need an intercooler then.

Not really unless you running lots of boost, a bigger turbo will not gain much without more mods.

Fitting depends more on how deep the intercooler is. A shallow one will fit easily enough. The deeper you go the more difficult it gets. You can get more space by pushing the radiator back with some custom mounts, or by cutting away are the slats in the lower part of the bumper. Go to the Dub Rides section and check out LazyLunatic's thread. He messed around with intercooler fitting a bit at one stage and could tell you more than I can.

Cheers guys, I will wait and have a look!

I do plan a lot of engine modifications, this isn't just for show/banter, it's a legitimate stage I will be taking to improve engine performance in the near future.

work out what everything you plan to do is going to cost you, then consider how much you can pick up a tdi lump from a mk4 for.. and keep in mind a pd130 diesel can go to 180bhp with software mods.

From what I've heard the MK4s require a lot of work to drop into a MK3.

It's not so much performance though, I appreciate peoples advice but it's more for me to learn about tuning TDI's than getting huge performance. I'm happy just using the 1Z TDI engine, it's fun enough and will do me for this year.  Got to start somewhere.

The point is that it is not a easy engine to tune and even with loads of work and money I think you would lucky to see 120 to 130bhp out of it.

Ahhh come on Wayne, your posts are getting stupid now.

The 1Z TDI is easily tuned, you can get 120bhp with just new nozzles and a remap.

Stop posting about stuff you know nothing about.

Work with diesels everyday plus when I worked on Vw's we did some work on the 90bhp engine and it did not respond well to tuning.
