Title: New Scottish Bloke
Post by: Greigy on 23 September 2010, 21:37
Hi folks,
Just got myself a Mk3 GTi 8v (for nowt....story to follow). She's a P Reg with 72k genuine on the clock. There's a few wee rusty bits on the outside but nothing that can't be sorted easy enough.
I'm planning modding it a bit just to make it a bit more personal like, so up for some suggestion.

Had a look a round on here and there's an awful lot of bonnie cars.

This is not my first trip down dub lane, I had a Helios Blue Mk2 16v for 3 years. It was my pride and joy but I moved overseas so sold it on the proviso that when I moved back home a year later I would buy it back. A fortnight later however the dude that bought it off me wrote it off.

Anyhoo, it's good to be back behind the wheel of a Golf again

PS I joined another vw forum and posted this, but seems very quiet over there and nobody's speaking. As I said, I'll be doing some mods to my wee beastie in the very near future so I'll likely be asking a heap of questions like where do I get, and how do you do...etc etc

Cheers for now

Hi there, you're gonna have loads of fun in your new freebie, mines black no mods as all free time spent on the driving, just out of garage after a painful week of locating a front end knock, loads of new parts and she's rollin fast n hard again. Have fun.

Right then, the story of how I got it fro free.

Last year I did the Scally Rally Road2Rimini which, for those who don't know is basically buy a car for £100 or less, tart it up and drive from Calais to Rimini across the Alps in 4 days. Well, as I said, last year I did it in this...

Great craic and would recommend it to anyone. Anyway, I was planning the event for this year and one of my mates had this wee golf which was just sitting in his garden (and had been for about a year). It used to be his daily driver but he was handed down an old 5 series from the father in law so the golf got left behind. It was at this point that I popped up and offered him £100 quid for the his Golf to which he agreed. He also said he would get it checked out at this local garage, get a pre mot check done etc. Nice bloke. The garage came back with bad news saying there was at least £800 quids worth of work to be done to get it through an mot.
My mate basically said if I still wanted it I could take it as he wouldn't be spending money on it to sell it. The next day I rocked up a his house with the car trailer and that, as they say, was that.
To fix it and get it mot'd cost in the region of £150-£200. All that was needed was ball joints, brake pipes front to back, a CV boot and a new back box. Needless to say I never did the rally this year. I couldn't bring myself to ruin this car. I will instead be hopefully restoring it's former glory whilst adding a few personal touches.

Cheer
Greig
