1.8 convertable 118 k miles on the clock
some times on starting in the morning there is a puff of smoke out the exhaust
not every time also there is a " slight knock " that goes immediatly
I think it is
1) valve guides worn allowing oil to pass and butn off
2) possible big end bearing that stops when oil gets into it
any one got any ideas ?
cheers

not every time also there is a " slight knock " that goes immediatly
I think it is
1) valve guides worn allowing oil to pass and burn off - Yep or stem seals
2) possible big end bearing that stops when oil gets into it - again yes or a tappet maybe.
any one got any ideas ?

Yes really, however it can be done without removing the head.
-
thanks for that
could you explain it a bit to me and what " tool " do I need ?
cheers

It can be done with leaving the head on and using compressed air.

do you take out a spark plug and pump air in then work on the valve but just taking off the rocker cover ?
cheers

Kind of... You screw an adaptor that keeps a high air pressure in the cylinder (with the help of an air compressor), meaning it holds the valve tight against the cylinder head. This allows you to compress the valve spring and get the 2 half moons out, allowing you to remove the valve springs to access the valve stem oil seals. It's a camshaft cover and camshaft off job, and obviously the tappets off too.

It would be more likley that its the valve stem seals rather than the guides themselves. Mine does similar if left for a few days, got the seals just need to get enough time to swap them.
FYI you can also do it without using compressed air. A long length of thick para cord, can be tucked down the spark plug hole (make sure you tie a fat knot in the end so you dont loose the whole thing down there) - then with the cam removed turn the engine over so you set the bore your working on to TDC - the piston will compress the cord against the bottom of the valves - holding them up. Then you just need to compress the valve spring, remove the retainer and collets. This tool from snap on makes life easier.

To give you a better idea of how it works - its not a VW lump but you should get the gist.
