Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 31 October 2010, 17:12
Well not a lot has happened to this since those pics.....

Oh hang on, maybe there has! I bought a pre 90 spec donor gti 8v and converted my jade green GL to PB power! Had plenty of mishaps and problems along the way believe me, but its all done and complete now, apart from I still have the disc rear beam with ARB and a 16v MC to fit, then thats the brakes and handling dealt with.

My main reoccuring issue is a bad earth causing it to blow no less than 4 ECU's so far! After the 1st 2 I managed to sort the problem out by adding various new earths here and there, then after the 3rd ECU she fired up and I drove it home from my garage. Good times. Apart from the clutch slipping like hell (which was my own greasy fingerprints so my own fault, it'l cure itself). I found the exhaust manifold gaskets leaking quite badly so I replaced those with the inlet mani gasket too, and while I was at it I fitted the vacuum pipe through the bulkhead for the MFA to work correctly. While it was in bits I made a huuuge fcuk up and flicked the ignition on whilst the earth leads were off, thus blowing another ECU

So after refitting everything and buying a 4th ECU, all is not good here as it still has no fuel pump or spark. Did put it up for sale as I'd given up, but no1 seems to want it and I just don't know what else to do now :(

Anyways here it is rocking a matt black bonnet off the donor car as my jade green one is scratched to hell (probs from me piling front crossmembers on it when it was in the garage)

wow.... great work  .... shame you didn't document the work on here (pics)..  Damn you were unlucky with the electrics, hope thats the end of that for you now then! bet its a nice drive.....

good work (nearly!)

dont sell it! you are so close to having it right.

dont suppose you still have the donor car do you? i need some bits and bobs off my doors. handle covers and bolts etc.

The whole thread is here

http://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=27059 (http://www.vwgolfmk2.co.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=27059)

I haven't got the donor car anymore but I've still got a whole load of bits left over. PM me a list of exactly what you need and I'l have a looksie mate. It was a great buzz driving it round the block, even though it wouldn't put the power down with a slippy clutch. Just gutted it won't start again. Its been sat outside for weeks now cuz I'm skint (still out of work  :embarassed:) and I just can't afford to keep buying ECUs and I've done everything I can with the earths
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: lewis1641 on 01 November 2010, 12:05
i wish i could help mate. i have an ecu but obviously dont want to risk it getting blown.

my mate works with ecu's - i'll see if his contacts have any old spares.

do you know what has blown inside? it might be something simple that can be replaced like a resistor or a chip or something?
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 01 November 2010, 22:34
tbh I'm not even sure the last 2 have blown, the 1st one was completely obvious but the 2nd one wasn't, so I tried repairing the 1st one with bits inside the 2nd one. I'm not sure if revised ECUs (ending in DB, my earlier one ends in "N") from 90 spec cars work, as the 2nd one was a DB code, but didn't work, then after I sorted the earths I fitted an earlier N code and it worked. Then when I blew that one I sorted the earths out again, fitted a later DB code ECU and it still won't work. Just seems a bit coincidental to me! I've been told that fitting a revised one shouldn't make a difference, but they do look diffrent inside, with more chips and transistors inside.

I wouldn't want to try anyone elses ECU in case I spoil their day too  But I really need to try these last 2 in another car, shame you havent got the digifant in and running yet  :smug:
Title: Re: before and after...

looks like I'm gonna have to break this
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 19 November 2010, 20:01
Right after a tense few days of the car being on ebay.....

No-one wanted her!

I cannot bring myself to break her after all my hard work, so I'm gonna get the 306 gone for whatever I can get for it and buy yet another ECU (will be the 5th) and hope she lives again! I am going to sell off a lot of the spares I wanted to keep though, seeing as times are hard

I'm secretly pleased it didn't sell tbh. I've not got coilovers, my car is on newish supersport shocks and -60mm springs mate.

I do feel for you mate, it must be frustrating. I personaly think that all us lincolnshire dubs should pull together and get ourselves down to you and try and figure this one out, serveral brains all working together are better then one???

cheeky bugger! What I really need is someone else with a digifant 8v gti for me to try my ECUs on, then I'l know the exact problem! Got someone on his way to see the 306!
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: Peej1981 on 19 November 2010, 21:43
And how much are you selling that for??? Is there no where in lincoln that you can take the ecu's just to get them tested to see if they are ok??? When i had my alfa (sorry for swearing) i took it to a place near the small tesco's where they tested the ecu and they said that they test all sorts of different ecu's and do all electrical stuff like that on cars.
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 19 November 2010, 21:50
I'd rather not pay to have them tested as I'm skint and I've been buying the ECUs for £20 a pop, but then theres the risk that they're duff too. Its up at £500ono as it is or £800ono with a full ticket. So I'm hooping to get enough to get the golf running and pay a deposit on insurance. Can't believe how much insurance has gone up in the past few months I've not had a car on the road! I'm 23 with no NCBs and 6 points and I can't get it cheaper than £900! So thats around £150 deposit and £90 odd a month! A lot when your out of work!

306 has gone!! £450

So the golf shall be put back on the road asap

Yeah hope you get it on the road and start to enjoy it, keep us updated on how it goes mate. As for the insurance well i have a few mates in the same problem, one is 19 just bought a clapped out 1997 nissan almera 1.4 and the cheapest he can find is £3250    What a joke.
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 21 November 2010, 16:51
Yea the insurance is a killer, its even making me consider driving it for a short while then maybe sell it after new year and buy a ready made gti or even a 1.8 driver (I have a gti cam and a few other bits I can use to make it quicker) as they'l be cheaper to insure. Plus I really like the idea of another B3 estate lowered on my P slots :)

you are the biggest puff jonny! Good news is I've just bought a cheap skoda felicia off ebay to run over winter, so my beloved golf will be donating its P slots to at least give the skoda some credibility! So yea I should be at the meet in a VW wannabe. Anyone got any vw badges they wanna donate?
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: Peej1981 on 25 November 2010, 19:21
Skoda's can be cool, Lewis1641 use to have a skoda pickup, slammed on steels, then he put his porch wheels that are on his signiture on it and it looked awsome.
I look forward to seeing the little beast in action

Have you managed to get anything else done on the golf?
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 25 November 2010, 21:50
I don't think the golf is gonna get any love this year, unless my job interviews go really well! As soon as I sell the spare engine and clear all the other golf bits out in the next week (or as soon as they cut this bloody cast off my hand) I'l be towing it down to my garage where it'l stay for a while. I'l get the wheels swapped over tomorrow and take some pics. I don't think I'l be washing it anytime soon as its just too cold out and I'm one handed! But it does need a hoover and clean out as it smells like dog breath inside!

You know what i think the p slots look very good on it, its not a bad little car and looks pritty tidy, how much did you pay for it?
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 29 November 2010, 11:01
A tad over £200, MOT till August and Taxed till Febuary

Its got a bit of rust on the back arches and bootlid, so you can tell its related to the mk3 golf and mk4 polo

wiggled the wires that go into the plug at the back of the ignition switch. theres one or two that are a bit loose in the plug. at least I hope thats what the problem has been!

ha, after all that!... lets hope that's all it was though but still a bummer you went through like 50 ecu's before hand though!
Title: Re: before and after...

Are the other ecu's ok then? Or is it a case of leave it alone if its working?
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 06 December 2010, 12:27
The 1st 2 are in the bin, the 3rd one is on the car now, and the 4th one I bought is still in the box it came in. I took it to my garage last night to put it to sleep for the winter, what a mission that was trying to plough it through a foot od snow! In the end I got it in there and I'm not 100% sure on this but I think just before I turned it off it cut out, or I could have knocked the key. Anyway I tried it again and guess what? The fuel pump won't prime! I tried wiggling the wires again to no joy. But it was dark. I'm just gonna leave it now till after new year and hope it plays ball in better weather

bad that it wont start but glad its not ecu related

Well well well. Seeing as I've been messed about with a few offers of swaps, and after driving this home from my garage today and LOVING it, I've decided to insure and tax it tomorrow. Gonna do the few odd jobs that need doing over this week, and enjoy it for a while. The clutch doesn't seem to be slipping now so its putting down the GTi powers well :)

Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 10 January 2011, 23:05
yea i'd lost the will to stick with it but even a short drive round the corner has brought it back. Especially now the clutch is better. I guess the grease on it has had time to dry out. Im taxing it in the mornin then im off to get some new brakes, oil, filter, cambelt, and swap radiators over as the other one is in better nick and the one on it has a faulty fan switch. Then drive it and enjoy it for a bit!

Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 11 January 2011, 14:56
god damn bastard f**king twit.

Had to make an adjustment to the brake light switch. After fixing that I now have another problem. Its back to its old tricks and I have no spark and no fuel pump prime. Now whenever this happened before I wiggled the wires at the back of the ignition switch and it would work. Now nothing will persuade it to work.

I'm pretty sure the 20 odd year old wiring is at fault and I must have a broken wire somewhere in that region. And it must be an ECU power feed from the ignition switch. Now can anyone tell me which wire it is from the ignition switch that sends power to the ECU? When I know exactly which one it is, I'l have to keep probing it with a continuity tester until I find where the break is. Theres a kink in a black/yellow wire that goes into the ignition switch so thats my prime suspect at the moment, I'm hoping someone can confirm this is the live feed for the ECU
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 12 January 2011, 17:48
Right, finally sorted out this intermittent problem with it not sparking or priming the fuel pump. It turned out to be a faulty ECU relay that only worked when it felt like it. Changed it and touch wood she's behaving. Today is an exciting day as I've taxed it and been out and about in it with big smiles! First time sice I did the conversion. Also picked up some new vented gti front brakes as its still running solid discs (which are shocking, especially now with the extra power!), pads, oil, filter, and a thermostat as the temperature sits a bit high. Tomorrow I'm gonna fit all the new bits, swap the radiator with the better one with a working fan switch, change the oil, and if I get time wire up the electric windows and look at why none of the dash lights are working, which I think is a bad earth or an earth lead not connected.
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 14 January 2011, 17:47
Bit of an update. I got my tax disc in the post today, only took 2 days! Also I've changed the oil, filter, thermostat (b!tch of a job), swapped radiators (the GL one is in better nick and has a working fan switch), attempted to fit gti front brakes but I have a rounded off caliper bolt, Wired up electric windows, sorted bodged head unit wiring, tomorrow I'l have a look at why the number plate lights, interior background lights (I believe they're on the same circuit), and front left indicator aren't working. Then I've got to sort the blowing exhaust, and then shes sorted. Oh and fit the gti rear beam, but that can wait.

Mate dont talk to me about rounding off caliper bolts i know too well what that is like, had the heat up the snapped one and very slowly turn it out then heat it up again and turn until i got it out.  Have you managed to sort it out? Sounds like you are really striding forward with your car now, will be good to see it at the meet.

Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 14 January 2011, 23:32
It was already rounded off before I touched it. And it was the 1st time I've touched the brakes on this car. I'm loving using it now, but not loving having the dash out again
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: lewis1641 on 15 January 2011, 09:54
good luck. i hate removing the dash
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 15 January 2011, 10:11
Its half way back on now, got too dark to finish putting back together last night. Dash removal isn't too difficult now I've done it twice on my car and once on the donor, just have to remember it helps in the long run to remove the steering wheel and the stalks

Today I've got more of getting high in the car to look forward to, soldering in there gets you a bit mashed and I've got 4 more joints to join up on the window wiring. Am I safe to use the power from the fag lighter? Will the 10amp fuse in the fusebox that covers the radio, interior light, and fag lighter be enough if I join the windows to that circuit?
Title: Re: before and after...
Post by: tsr_adi on 15 January 2011, 17:45
Right then, my interior is all back together now, with working electric windows and CD player. I've looked into why my interior background lights/number plate lights aren't working and it seems I have power at the back of the switch but no power to fuse 20. So I'm gonna investigate that tomorrow.

And why is it every mk2 I've ever had DOESN'T want to let me push a head unit in all the way?? Really bugs me! Also I've decided I'd like to swap my chrome door handles for black ones, Already have 2 off the donor car so will swap with someone, even if they have a 3 door. Also decided to put the P slots up for swaps with RA's, I fancy a change.

Well I copied it from a citroen ZX I had, it breaks up the rather bland black dash that the mk2 was adorned with  :undecided:

Well after a driveshaft decided to come off yesterday and screwing the threads on the gearbox flange, I'm going to have to sort out my 4+E gearbox and get that back on. Was unlucky it happened with a sofa on my roof though

Red trim looks really good.

The 4+E box is now back together properly and ready to be swapped with the tired old gti box tomorrow. So no more 2nd gear crunch and better MPG's

A mk2 GL with rear discs? OUTRAGE!!

As you can see my shoes were about dead anyways, so it would have been rude not to really.

Yup, only problem is the handbrake cables are too short! So I'm gonna have to keep away from steep hills

I've done a few small jobs today, had to paint the front calipers red to match the rears, not my preffered colour (I'd have them silver) but its just the paint I had at the time. I've fixed the broken pipe from the flying saucer to the rocker cover with another bit of pipe. Also removed the trumpet from the airbox so when the calipers are dry I'l enjoy some induction roa

looks good mate nicely converted to disks.. and much easier to change in the future than drums and shoes..

The conversion took less time and frustration than it would have done to fit new brake shoes! If only I knew mk2s had 2 different handbrake cable lengths I wouldn't have done it until I knew I had the right ones! Its been a nightmare avoiding steep hills

I've had a few busy days on the car, I stripped all the carpets and soundproofing out as the passenger side front and rear footwells had puddles of water in them, which I found to be caused by no scuttle rain tray and a leaky floorpan grommet. I now have a rain tray made from a mk3 interior bootlid cover and I've sealed up anything on the floor that I think may let water in. After a few days of drying the carpets and soundproofing out I spent a good 3 hours or so cleaning the carpets which I'm well pleased with, so much so that I've almost declared the inside a no shoes allowed zone! I did have some pictures of the puddles in the floorpan and during refitting the carpets but my phone decided it would lose them :( Anyways heres some pics of it now...

And I made some little brackets for the parcel shelf supports as they were both broken off and plastic welded them on, but the phone lost pics of that :|
I've also repaired the interior bootlid panel thats been broken since I got the car and I've retrimmed it in black vinyl :)
