Title: 2nd hand or recon?
Post by: alex160 on 21 September 2010, 10:06
My Gearbox is slowly getting sicker , Would you reccomend buying a low millage one off ebay for around £400 mark or gettting my box reconditioned, had a few qoutes which vary depending on work which would be needed but alot of the companys say the tdi gearboxes suffer with bearing problems and have qouted me £425+vat for bearing overhaul. Advice please

Well found the best qoute so far from a company near me which have very good rep for their work, been qouted £640 for a complete gearbox overhaul, new shafts/gears bearings/gaskets/oil etc etc, they include removal and refitting of gearbox aswell, debating whether to bit the bullet and get the clutch changed at the same time, has been in there for 70k now  :undecided:

Ask them to inspect the clutch plates when they remove the gearbox   Could be worth doing though as you'll know its sorted.

We had an issue with a works van where they overhauled the gearbox but didn't advise us that a new clutch was needed.  I hadn't got halfway back to the depot and the clutch was slipping in nearly every gear   Luckily we didn't pay for the labour to fit a new one

Ay as that's more expensive than the clutch itself

if ya gona pay £650 for gearbox over haul you might aswell pay a bit more and get single mass flywheel and new clutch then you will have no problems for years to come :)

Pointless paying for full gearbox recon as they're only warrantied for limited mileage/1 year.

Mayaswell get a 2nd hand box for about £100-£200 max, Do clutch while your there £90, Dual mass will need inspecting.

I can't find a 6 speed tdi gearbox for any less than £400 from brokers, I wasnt aware you could convert the dual mass flyhweel on the tdi to a single mass

6 speed diesel dual mass to smf: 6 speed SMF flywheel are expensive off the shelf, i know where to get them for about £250 mark new but 100% do NOT fit to a diesel. Makes them noisy as hell on idle.

6 speed diesel box: Don't buy it from a breakers, ive bought 3 on ebay for £50-£150. All have been good boxes, 1 had only done 25k miles.
