Title: would somebody please confirm if this deletes the midbox?
Post by: dlongmu on 20 September 2010, 18:42
OK, I gotta backbox and want to delete the midbox so fit a pipe that goes from the end of the midpipe, removes the midbox and hoops over the rear axle to meet the backbox pipe.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/exhaust-mid-box-mid-pipe-VW-Golf-Mk3-Stainless-Steel-/310238181565

This looks like it does exactly that, but as it says midbox to midpipe its confusing me - does anybody know for sure if this does exactly what I'm after as the local exhaust shop is looking to charge me 100 pounds for an equivelant in mild steel.

Thanks,
David

Perfect Wayne! So again, to doubly confirm (as I really want my exhaust done by this weekend) I can whip off the middle box, stick this pipe on and itll slip onto my backbox (give or take a few cm's - the exhaust shop can finalise it for a few quid I'm sure). And if it's loud all the better, just now with the mid box and no back box it's still virtually silent.

I'm tempted with one of these too, if anyone has a video of it fitted to stock exhaust system I'd be interested to hear

Sweeet dude  Ordering now!

Yeah,  that's what I thought - backbox isn't on car and you hear the faintest breathyish noise under full throttle. I was thinking it was some miracle engine! So I sure hope it will be a damned site louder with the mid-box removed. Silly q, I notice that 8v's do that funny puff on decel when tapping the throttle 1-2k revs, does that often translate to pops and bangs when the exhaust gets opened up? I remember seeing a few 8v mk2's which flamed like crazy!

Back box seriously doesn't do much compared to the middle silencer. I ran without a backbox due to...ahem....loosing it on a country road, for a month or two and the car wasn't any louder than the standard exhaust, it was a bit throatier accelerating, but nothing even CLOSE to loud. Soon as middle silencer went and stuck on a small rear box, it popped and banged like a machine gun.

My backbox ripped off my estate when i had the 1.8 and it was fairly loud, quite a nice sound to be honest :D but without the middle silencer i would invest in a decent backbox for a nice sound :)

Mind you I had a rally spec camshaft, so it did pop more than the average car.

Would it pass an mot without the midbox?

Entirely depends on the station. I have a 400bhp 300zx with 1 box at the back and no cats, and I had a prelude with the same setup - the prelude was rediculously loud even on Idle, god help anybody with sensitive hearing within 200 yards of it. both exploded like a shotgun off throttle and spat massive flames (the 300zx rediculously large). Both passed MOTs with no issues :)

It will pass MOT no problems mate, silencer has nothing to do with emissions.

Well just fitted it (perfect fit by the way)... with the sebring backbox on the end it sounded crap.. seriously, crap!  quiet at idle raspy as hell with revs.. not my cuppa tea.

Left open it sounds lovely, nice deep rumble on idle and no raspyness until about 5-6k revs. The over-run sounds just mint but perhaps a little loud..

I can't test how it sounds with my peco bigbore 2 as the diameters are the same so will have to get my dad to hold it over tomorrow.

So going to the exhaust shop on Saturday, it'll either be the peco, or a bit of pipe with round tailpipes

Sadly it's obvious what the lack of backpressure does, it seriously hurts the mid-range
