Title: Would you want a stolen car back?
Post by: Beardo on 20 September 2010, 14:14
Just following on from the Tracker thread...

My car was nicked over the weekend and recovered seemingly unmarked (the plod still have it mind so not checked it).

Question now is can i live with it, are they coming back for it (they seem to of done a drive past according to the CCTV) and how miserable am i gonna get !

Anyone got any advice having had a recovered car back for a while and how's it affected them?

Thanks!

I had a bad experience with a prevous car (Scooby) where I had 2 attempted break ins. Thankfully they didnt do too much damage. Even though they didnt get away with the car it made me really paranoid and so I sold the car.

To answer your question, I don't think I would want it back. But I guess if the cops find it you have to have it back. In my case they came back and had another go at the house, so it would make me think about wanting to keep the car. It worth bolstering up the security on your property if you can. I put some extra high fence panels in and a few security lights.

If you haven'y got a garage, I will sell my GTI and buy something like a debadged Skoda vRS or Leon Cupra which most 'THICK' car thieves aren't clue-up what it is!

I bought a dog since someone last tried to break in to my house.

Shame that dog is a softy---wouldn't deter any potential future break-in!

Where do you guys live that you have so many break-ins?

If my car got stolen but recovered fairly quickly with no damage then I would get over it.

If the car was never recovered then for  me it would take the shine off from owning a GTI for a while and I'd probably purchase a different car as I'm a funny bugger like that.

The fact it doesn't really matter where you live. I live a nice house, good area etc but we got burgled a few years back. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and now we have a decent house alarm and security lights etc which would have probably prevented the break-in. Ps get a safe as we'll (We mainly had jewellery stolen, most of which was irreplaceable for sentimental reasons).

In my line of work I have worked a few times with females that have been raped.
As if that isn't bad enough for the families, one common problem has been the male (husband or partner) of the victim. They feel their possession has been violated and really struggle to come to terms with being close with them again.

I know cars are totally different and are only objects but I can imagine the principal being similar.

I don't think I would want my car back knowing folk had been in it and doing all sorts!!

I had my previous Merc ML Diesel stolen twice from my house, both times keys were taken. On each occasion the car was driven about 20 miles away and parked in a residential street. Both times it was left parked perfectly and locked up. It had a tracker and was recovered by the Police on both occasions. First time took 5 days, second time took 2 hours.

Thats when the fun starts as the car is then taken to secure lock up for finger printing and then on to a Merc dealer to have new locks fitted. ( need passport for that ). That takes about 10 days while you have to drive around in a courtesy car. At this point you find out how good / bad your insurance company is.

Each time it came back after having a full diagnostic check, full valet and wheel alignment which I insisted on, so I was quite happy to take it back. It was also not registered as stolen / recovered which is important.

I was lucky it was in perfect nick both times having been apparently 'stolen to order'.

Nobody was ever caught and Police never came back to me after that.

I now have CCTV, dog and house alarm. Front and rear doors are all deadlocked now as well.

If the GTi was stolen that would be different I think. Maybe it would be used in a getaway and be thrashed as it is a different type of car.

I've had two cars stolen and recovered over the years, one of them was extensively damaged and written off by the insurance company, the other was not damaged, but I didn't want it and sold it soon after it was returned.

Reading these posts it just goes to show how common car theft is.

Let's face it criminals of this nature only get a little slap on the wrist (if their ever caught that is).

Right I'm about to swear a lot so cover your ears/eyes!

I'm well pissed as ive just received a bill from the recovery firm for £250!!! I had no choice and wasn't told there would be a charge otherwise I'd of fetched the sodding thing myself.

I Wish I'd never paid for the tracker to be activated. They would never of found it and i'd of just had to pay my excess and got a new car! F*cking hell.

Tracker, car recovery, new locks/keys. Suppose a claim on the insurance is in order so that's more b*stard money come renewal and to finish me off the b*stard road tax renewal came today too. C*nting w*nkers!

Ive only had the car a month and the car before that was the f*ckin superchips c*nting demo car incident. FFS! Me and golfs are so not meant to be it seems.

The plod also wanted to keep my new iPhone and chemical dip it to check for prints. Can you bollocks!

Christ on a f*cking bike. And while I'm at it my adsl is w*ankered.

There feel marginally better now.

Thanks chaps, feel better about it now but christ what a pain in the arse.

Karma says I should win the lotto now but seeing as I just thought that I would that's probably pissed on those chips too.

Hopefully I'll get the orange revel at some point soon.
