Title: smooth bumper
Post by: MrAnderson93 on 20 September 2010, 00:54
finally finished my bumper, i think its s**t hot and the indicators are perfectly visible deep down there, infact in the night the bumpers so glossy that the light reflects off the paint in the outer vents and they seem even brighter than what they actually are lol, just need to tint the lenses now so they dont stand out as much, what you all think? ><

yeah i though they would be a bit hidden but by the time the front indicators go out of sight, the side markers are clearly visible so its all good >< you doing half smooth like me or full on, like removing the swage line etc.?

well 1/2 is what you did, full is too much, so 3/4 - numberplate and lights, but im keeping the line (gonna be fun  :nerd:) as i think its too bland without it :)

Very nice!
I think the standard gti bumper looks good with the swage line left in,
but if it was a smooth top bumper, i would say smooth the whole fecker.
I haven't seen another mk3 with the indicators at the bottom like yours.
Good work.

just cut 1 hole in the edge of the vent on the outside (well poked a solering iron through ><) then I cut the plastic supports from where the indicators originsasly weere (you kow the bit that the metal springy bit clips into) and i plastic welded them in the bottom, tried to keep everything as OE as possible so i basiclayy just moved the whole indicator and its mounts down haha

I think if you check you indicators are mounted to low and are illegal.

well they can be seen alot better in the night than most modern cars with the indicators in the headlight housing, ive had many situations with the bumper where no ones been confused and i was even at a cruise the other night with police looking over the car and they didnt seem to pick up on it

Take a minute to read the construction and use regs, indicators have to be a set height from the road, trust me yours are too low.

does that maximum height mean the maximum distance between the pavement and indicator then?

Mk4 style headlights with built in indicators would solve the indicator issue. You can get them from Venom and other online stores, or hunt the classifieds for a set. The smoothing looks like a great job :afro: Did you cut out sections from a rear bumper and plastic weld them in?

cheers dude, was at a cruise and was talking to a proper panel beater and was lookign around his "show car" a few people had said my work was better than his haha

yep, when i upgraded to gti bumpers it was lucky i kept the old textured black ones, yeah i did cut out the pieces off my old one, just there are a few tiny wobbles in the swage lines where everything meets but it is pretty straight i just need a vento front now, everything else is square and horizontal

Not a fan to be honest, might look better without the textured strip though  :undecided:

No road to indicator.

+1 smooth and all one colour would be better.

yeah thats what i menat, cheers dude i know your only tryna keep me out of bother but as ive said the feds didnt notice the other night, and i havent had any bother with people not seeing them i realise its my own risk and im fine with it, id probably have to come across the strictest copper in britain for anyone to notice anything lol and when i give the car a good clean and polish up the black bits the red/black contrast looks amazing and i wish everyone would stop trying to totally smooth mk3's and make em look like mk4's just buy a 4th gen haha

Don't get me wrong, I understand the wanting to be different thing and i'm not slating it at all. If your happy with it that's the main thing :afro:

Personally it looks a bit like a half job, but then i'm running standard bumpers so i'm not really in a position to criticise  :lipsrsealed:

Smoothed bumper while keeping the textured upper part is tricky since it's hard to get the textured areas to meet up properly and looking clean. It's not for everyone but I really like it.
