I currently have another post on here regarding to my golf gti mk3 problems, someone mentioned have i got vagcom??
I have looked on ebay and seen these vagcoms and just wonder how it works
do you have to use your laptop becuase the ones i have seen pictured have a lead with the 16 pin end and what looks like a usb at the other end along with a cd.? also with mine been a 1995 mk3 does this mean mine is OBD II
any help with this would be great cos i will buy one if it will make my diagnosis easier and plus i have a mk3 vr6 on drive with faults so i could do the same with that
cheers.............

Yeah, it plugs into a socket by the ashtray and the cd will be to install the software onto a laptop. I think the way to tell if its obd 1 or 2 is by counting the number of pins?! Someone else will probably be able to help more than me!

Obd1 is 12 pin, obd2 is 16 pin.

This thread will show you where the port is:

If it is next to the ash tray then it is OBD2, I think they changed in 95 so it could be either.
You'll need the lead from eBay and the software, the software is available as a free download from ross-tech but you'll need to find a crack to use all the features.

ok thanks for all the help, mine is by the ashtray, would the vagcom be able to find faults like on the coil etc..

My 1995 model is OBD2....not sure if a faulty coil pack will flag up on Vag Com but it would tell you if miss fire is from 1,2,3 or 4 then you can check the plug and lead first then the coil pack unless you can get hold of a second hand coil pack to test it. Whereabouts are you as plenty of people on here have Vag Com and may scan it for you.
