Can anyone help me? I have taken the starter motor out of my 92 1.4 CL to test it as i think it may be playing up
There are 3 wires which connect to the solenoid, the main positive wire and another smaller wire connect to the large copper stud sticking out
then there are 2 spade type connector tabs, one of which had a wire on it, the other didnt.... should it? because if its supposed to be connected to somthing that could be my problem
heres a piccy for better explaining

Nothing.

Cheers, seems quite odd but atleast that rules that out for my starting problem
-
starter earths through engine/box hence only has 12v battery and 12v stage 3 ignition, whats the problem mate?
-
Well i took it out of the car, tested it outside the car and the solenoid was working fine, pinion went forwards fine, motor span fine
put it back in the car and it started and ran fine for the whole day.... great! i though, its fixed and i didnt have to buy anything
 went to start it this morning and got nothing again
when i turn the key i get nothing, doesnt turn over or click or anything
when the car is on jump leads it starts every time, i also managed to get it to start this morning by sticking it in 4th and rolling the car a bit, it then started fine
so not sure exactly what the problem is with it, but looks like i need to get a new motor/solenoid
-
Just double check the 12v stage 3, unplug it connect to dvm and ask a mate to turn igntion to start, if you get decent 12v reading there then its the starter, but does sound like the starter is on the way out from what you've said.

Cheers, i'll have a look when my dad gets home, that wire is a right pita to get to with the old style round airfilter on the carb
Just looking at starter motors on ebay and places, mines a 1.4, are the GTI, 1.8, 1.6 motors all the same? and auto/manual? if they are i could get one pretty cheap
-
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I know all 4cyl petrol ones are the same, so you could use a 1.8GTi one?
-
Mines a 1.8 auto and I tested a 1.6 manual in it, then bought the proper one for the car andv it was slightly different to the original one.
Three different engines I presume, all fit and worked.

if it starts on jump leads its not the starter. its the battery or you have a voltage drain.
small block starters arnt the same as big block ones im afraid
-
Oh just re read that. yeah if it starts on leads and if left a while it doesn't, I'd say voltage drain or try a different battery if you have one.
-
Its not the battery, i tried a couple in there and it made no difference
like i said if you can push the car and turn it over a couple of times it will start fine
-
ah, that sounds liek the same issue we had on our mk3 polo. put it in 3rd then rock car and it would be fine. on that one it needed a new starter motor to fix it
