Earlier I heard a car alarm going off outside and it occurred to me that even with being on my second MK5 GTI I have no idea what the alarm sounds like!
I looked out of the window and it looked OK, as did my old Freelander, but I have no idea what that sounds like either, if it does have an alarm....
The alarm going off sounded like a horn - so what about the Golf? :)

Open the windows then lock the car as normal. Leave it 30 secs or so then wave your hand in front if the sensor inside the car. This should set it off. Failing that, just break in properly with a universal key such as a hammer. This I feel may be a little extreme to hear an alarm.
The golf alarm does not sound like a horn, it's a siren instead, 2 tone I believe

Or just give your car a good shove. Sets mine off no problems.

Stick a brick through the drivers window. If it doesnt work do the passanger one after that and wolla.

An engineers brick is probably the more favourable choice
