Hey chaps.
Got this a few weeks ago and so far really loving it. People think I'm a tad crazy after selling my BMW 328 for one but that's a whole story in its self.
Looots planned but just on with the little bits at the moment!

Nasty rusty cill I cleaned up, luckily it hadn't rusted through.

Next was a little engine mod (known as the evry mod) which tricks the engine into thinking it's cold, dumping more fuel in. It adds around 20bhp, which is noticeable!
Because of the smoke it coughs out of the back and no doubt the damage it could do to my engine and MPG I installed it to a switch... a missile switch.

Next was interior! I didn't like the cream, my plan origionally was to strip it all out and do black door cards and trim but after fitting my new speakers with the black trim I actually love the 2tone black/cream combo...

Thinking of making the fabric in the door cards black to carry the theme on more?
I've also got a new roof lining, which I'm going to dye black, to replace the current cream one.
Found an old school gear knob to, lol, loving the 'E' for economy instead of the 5th.

And finally I've got a GTI Boot spoiler to stick on, I sprayed it matte black, I will eventually be repainting the whole car to a related theme. :smug: Not all matte black though, I'll let you wait and see.

Anywho it's a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to keeping you guys upto date.

New Pioneer headunit looks quite sexy when next to a missile switch.

Good start so far!.... love the 20bhp Smokey Boost Switch!

How do you add this 20bhp mod? :)

In the engine bay the 8pin fuel harness, you cross(bridge) wires 2 & 3 with a 1000ohm resistor.
What I did was get a potentiometer (adjustable resistor) so I can adjust the setting, the less resistance, the more power, I think mine is at about 400ohm atm, it certainly shakes the car when on at idle, lol. Local Maplins will stock them. ;)
Here's a pic of the pot connected to the switch:

I put tape around it so it doesn't try to adjust its self on the move.

Nice, have you put the boot spoiler on yet?

Not yet,
The silicone I got said it took 14hours to dry, lol, so I've decided to get some Tigraseal that is highly recommended instead. Should be here tomorrow... maybe the coilovers to!
-
Progress.
Got spoiler on and dropped it to the deck.
Coilies

Major spillage...

The factory front shock was so mangled I used a hack saw to cut the shaft in half, in order to get the plates off I needed for the coilover, it was a lot of work but it did the trick.
Also short shifted the gear stick.
Watch this space.

You should not need any parts from the old shocks unless you have reused the old top mounts which is daft.
Also overfueling it will not add 20bhp but will in the end kill the engine.
-
looking gd mate, any other plans??
-
Yep next plan is to have it painted, clean up wheels until I have the cash to drop on some nice wheels.
Also wanting a front intercooler fitted ready for the engine improvements in future.
@Wayne....

No, you do need the upper strut mount and bearing for these coilies.

No again. It's a known TDI mod, which has been dyno'd and proved. Has been around for years. Feel free to read the feedback on this 45page thread:

Reusing the old top mounts is daft, they are not expensive and will fail really quick with it lowered.
Reference overfueling I work with diesels everyday so your choice but you will I am sure end up damaging something.
A remap I know adds extra fuel but what doing is leagues different.

thats waynes point though, you shouldn't re-use them. best to replace as they're not expensive.
-
sorry wayne, posted at the same time!
-
Hence why it's on a switch Wayne.
Reusing them will do, cross the fail bridge when I get to it ey.
-
ignore wayne, he thinks he's the oricle
agree you need to buy new top mounts though however how low youve got it the car wont last long ;)
-
They did seem in good nick, I need to re-adjust suspension a tad anyway so will get it all done next week and accept your advice. Cheers.
-
Looks good but as already stated not replacing the top mounts is a false economy as you'll have to refit them with new mounts when the old ones fail
-
to be honest its done now so he may as well wait till they do fail.
-
Ha what a coincidence. I just dont pretty much the same thing.
Bought a mk3 tdi in dragon green for less that £100 six week ago. Pretty much a rust bucket. Had no M.O.T so I took a risk. Shabby cream interior. Central locking not fully working. Not all windows working (took one regulator and a crap load of soldering), Has a/c and electric sunroof though. After a six week graft and a big thanks to my mate Faddy (who is a professional engine tuner and is going to do the golf) Its coming out of the body shop today. Forgot to mention a big wad of cash. Need to set the coilovers tonight. Will post some pics asap.

Nick,
Saf just called me to check this thread out. I almost spilt my tea when I read it
This is freakily similar to what we've been working on over the last month or so.
Both Saf and I are in our 30's now and this project has just gripped us and taken over our lives... I'm sure our wive's are on the brink of leaving us.
Saf bought the 5 door Mk3 GL TDI as a runabout for £99 but when we spent some time with it we realised it's such a good car, that we needed to clean it up a bit.
Just like you the, coilovers came first.. and then it just snowballed from there.
Our car is a really good base as it's fully specced with 4 x electric windows, electric sunroof, A/C and a full VW service history.
It needed some welding on the sills for the MOT, and the other bits (wheel bearings, track rod end and brake pads, we just did ourselves and got the MOT). We knew then that it's a good investment.
Since then we found a donor 5 door GTI in Dragon Green from another member on here and we took everything we could use from it including:
Complete Arch and door moulding kit
Side Sills
GTI lights
Roof spoiler
Front Bumper, Back Bumper
Front foglights and reflectors, indicators and side repeaters
Both front wings
Door mirrors
And a few other bits..
We also bought some Team Dyanmics 17' rims and a fitting kit..
Then this week we found a complete Highline leather interior, and on the weekend we bought a Recaro Heated Colour Concept interior too (as I have a Polo 6N2 too)
Anyways, long story short, we completed interior install yesterday, including switching carpets and every last bit of trim from beige to black.. It's been painted now and we should be buffing it up tonight and I'll post some pics up.
As Saf has said, I am an engine tuner for Elite Remaps and will be tuning the ECU soon to make the most of the engine and turbo
You're only in York, we're in Bradford - you should pop down and check it out and we can compare notes.
I have a complete 5 door VR6 cloth velour interior with door cards that's currently in my Polo, but when the heated Recaro's go into it, I'll be selling it so it might be perfect for you if you're on a budget :)
