Title: Strange engine noise at 3000 rpm
Post by: Radek on 15 September 2010, 20:45
Fellow GTI owners,
Maybe it's just me but I think my car has developed a strange noise, from just under 3000 rpm (from 2700 to 3300 maybe). It sounds like whine, or some sort of friction. It's not the famous wastegate rattle. It's constant in that rev range in any gear - though best audible in 1st or 2nd. It gets noisier with the engine warming up. Sometimes it almost sounds like a diesel.
I've been to VW but they say it's always been like that. I'm not convinced... Tried to record it but from inside the cabin it's not good.

Is that normal? Do your cars sound like that, I mean do you hear a noticeable change of engine tune/noise from around 2700 rpm?

Can't say I've noticed but will concentrate on this tomorrow and report back.

Ive read of the exhaust 'rattling' in a simlar rev range... could it be ?

It's more like grinding sound, pretty constant while the exhaust rattle is only on acceleration if I remember correctly. I've got that as well, anyway ;) Just like every TSI engine

Checked for this today.
Could not replicate it.
Sorry.

Dump valve burst? Have you noticed a change in preformance? If you can, can you get a run with VAGCOM?

I've had loads of theories, starting from loose engine mount, through exhaust problem to faulty gearbox. VW say it's fine but I'm going there again tomorrow and will ask them nicely to check.
It does seem to be on a slow side these days but it's difficult to say for sure. I can easily get to 120-130 mph but the acceleration somehow is lacking. A direct comparison would be needed. Anyone from around Bedford/Milton Keynes area free during weekend for little help?

Update:
I went to VW last week and after a short drive I finally got the master tech to admit there is an usual noise. It's funny when you say that you can hear it only when driving, not on idle and they put the car on a ramp and say they cant hear anything (yes, when idling...) :)
Anyway, he didnt recognise the noise and said it could be just "unwanted engine characteristcs" and he would have to compare it with other GTIs with DSG and similar mileage. I guess that's not gonna happen anytime soon but he gave me nice advice at the end: don't worry, if it breaks down it's covered by warranty

I'll try another dealer this Friday, if that's not going to help I'll ring VW customer service. Let's see what they can do... Also I'll try to record the noise

It makes you wonder, we shell all this coin out for a quality car, only to be fobbed off at the first hurdle. Its not the first time i have read a thread were VW just fail to help. Cheeky fookers.

Hope it gets sorted mate.

All companies have this tactic, at first they will deny there is a problem/ push you to the manufacturer/etc as it has been shown that a good percentage of people will give up. It's not that they don't know/accept there is a problem, it is a way of reducing their costs of resolving problems

I went through the whole unpleasant gamut, 2 Warranty Managers (one of them useless, the other one brilliant), VW Technical (Rubbish), VW Customer Services (Mainly ineffective as they are tied up with VW Technical), VW Escalation team (Superb), 105 letters with letters to VW MD Chris Craft etc etc. Justice was done eventually but one has to be in for the long haul.

Scary!

I’ve been to another dealer. The tech guy heard the noise straight after we drove off. Took the car inside the workshop and after 5 minutes the service advisor turned up saying: It’s normal. So I asked since what mileage they were supposed to sound like that. He said from 3000 miles. That’s strange because I’ve got 19000 on the clock and have noticed the noise only recently…
When asked if there is an official VW memo on that (like the wastegate rattle) he didn’t know. Or didn’t’ care, couldn't be bothered, you name it...

I don’t think it’s an engine problem but some weird resonance somewhere from the engine bay but without actually listening to another GTI I don’t want to waste time chasing VW. When a used GTI appears on the approved VW list somewhere around my area I’ll give it a go to find out.

I’ll record it somehow this week (if it’s not raining…) and maybe you guys can have a listen
