I currently have a Jetta GTI MK2 and I'mlooking to get a Golf but not sure about MK 2 or 3. I was thinking about a J reg MK2 16V but maybe I'd be better off with a MK3 as it's a bit newer.
A few questions: -
Whats the performanve of a MK3 vs a MK2? I know MK3's are 2L where as a MK2 is 1.8L but what about weight?
What the religibilty of MK3 vs MK2? I have heard that the early MK3's have major problems.
p.s.
Hi all btw

Hi and welcome
Ok I have had a 16v mk2 and a 8v mk3 and personally I would go with the mk2 everytime.
Mk3 is heavy but a easy drive.
Mk2 is more fun to drive.
-
When the Mk3 was launched, the 8v was described in some horror as not being fit for a GTI badge, and should of been the GL.
When the 16v Mk3 came along, things didn't get much better. It was also called "unfit" to carry the 16v badge considering the Mk2 16v's history. The 16v was described as being no better than the Mk2 8v.
The problem for the Mk3 16v was that the Mk2 16v was always the King of the Hot Hatches. Ever since it was launched it was The Hot Hatch. The only reason the Mk2 stopped being The King was because they stopped making it. It was a hard act to follow, and VW fumbled and dropped the ball in quite spectacular style.

mk2 everytime!
it's faster, lighter, looks better, handles better!
the k-jet is a peice of piss to fix if it goes wrong.
-
out of a mrk2 or 3,,
mrk 2 16v wins evary time, you cant beat them
-
Cant loose with mk2's
You will find lots of problems with mk2's but thats what its all about. fun to drive but not as comfy as the newer mk3's
-
Mk2 all the way (H)
-
OH Dear the big debate opens yet again lol
I have a mk2 and a mk3, and altho only the mk3 is a GTi, i can honestly say I prefer the MK3, as it is more comfy to drive, yet I can see the appeal of the mk2 GTi's, The thought of dropping a 16valve lump in the mk2, now that would be fun :D.
SO its MK3 for me I am afraid.
-
Told you you should have got a mk2 Gti, think there might have been a change in opinion, especially if it was a 16v
-
mk2 16v for me, i got rid of mine a while back and have missed it since, ive had a mk3 8v and tbh there as mentioned above not worthy of a gti badge, a friend of mine has a mk3 16v gti and it nothing to write home about, so id go with a mk2 16v gti all day long. sorry just my opinion!!!! not that i can talk, driving a seriously ugly vw at the moment!!

I have a mk3 8v and i have come to realise recently that i just don't give a sh:t it does the job i want it to do i can get more than enough out of it to lose my licence or kill myself and others so i dont really care.O and its comfy.Still planning on getting a mk1 or mk2 though at some point..
-
I think to be honest its down to a matter of personal taste!
Both are good cars, just depends on what you want out of a car.

I've had a Mk2 16v and a Mk3 16v, and I definately prefer the Mk2. It's more raw, more fun.
I wrote a comparison back in april last year. Take a read:

The MK3 wins hands down for me every time.
-
Mk1 all day long. I think people get put off by the age, but if you find a goodun then it's the most fun, reliable car ever. I've had mine for a year, and it's the most reliable car I've ever had, you'd never know it had done 175k and was 23 years old. And as for the torque, it pulls like a train, and leaves my 4-MOTION for sh!t on a 0-40!
