Is this a free mod to do? Or would i need to buy bits and bobs for it, if itll cost a bit i won't do it, i likes the drive of the non- pas, brother has a mk1 citi, but his wheel is huge though!!
This is my pas pump and looks like it could soon go anyway! So may cheaper in the long run to be away with it?

You'll need a manual rack, manual steering column UJ, then set up your tracking again.
I'd imagine the cost would be around £100 for the above.
Personally wouldn't bother, PAS is a much better (and quicker) feel on a MK2, manual is for sissies.

the power-steering rack is quicker than the non-power, but a common mod in the US is to loop the system and ditch the pump etc. There are even people selling plug n play kits. See vortex for further info

ohright, as in bypassing the pump, but still keeping the same setup so you still have the rack. Is that speed as in more responsive or just quicker at turning the wheels to full lock ?
Would that have a good improvement over pas? Atm the pas doesnt even seem to be that good, as in everyone whos drove it has asked if it was pas? could that be my pump knackered as its rusted to hell!

Driving with a PAS rack with no pump = FAIL, its twice as heavy as a manual rack.
You can get a reasonable feel for how it would be if you flick the IGN off whilst driving, give it a bash in an empty car park - JUST DON'T REMOVE THE KEY - as your steering lock will come on!

drove mine once with no pas but with teh pas rack as had to have the pipes made up at pirtec, DH will also voutch for how stupidly heavy the steeri ng is

The MK2 isn't blessed with "modern techonology" why get rid of one of the few bits it had.
Your only making the car worse.
Why not go the whole hog and buy an 8v.

Been driving without it for years and all i can say is that it has built my shoulders up nicely but they ache a lot so pas is on the cards with mine. I picked up another golf recently with pas and it was a joy to drive one handed.

Pumps always look rusted to sh!t is it actually pumping?
I've got a spare floating about if you need one?

God knows, it feels ok and can hear something when i turns it on full lock, got a tiny wheel with heavy ass bbs on them and i dont break a sweat so got to be ! obv not as free flowing as the modern cars!

Then strip it off Hamerite the b!tch stick it back on job done.
Usually if the fluid is very still in the resivor then something is wrong when you full lock it you can see currents or choppy waves of fluid moving about. It might need some new fluid and thats job done?

SO LEAVE IT ALONE!
At least, replace the belts and make sure they're tensioned up right.
At most buy another pump and put it on a shelf in the shed/garage.
Do that and £10 says the current pump will never break. :grin:

if the turns lock to lock were the same this might be the case, but they aren't and shorter racks are always more fun
