Title: alternator

had alternator tightened up and it sounds dead winy, you know like an electric sort of whining sound.  Any ideas?
Its doing my head in

you have to tighten the belt up at the correct tightness!

too tight and you will wear the belt out quicker and also wear out the alternator bearings, and water pump!!

i'd doubt if it affects the crankshaft!

if its too tight it could be the belt which is whining!

if its making a noise then its too tight!

Yeah if you overtighten the belt you're going to load those bearings and wear them out. IMO as long as the belt doesn't slip (when wet) then its tight enough. If you need to do it up too tight to prevent fan belt squeal, then you need a new belt.
