Seems Continentals are best overall followed closely by Michelins. The former quieter too.
Bridgestones not too good and very noisy. Said so many posts ago.

Michelins seem more suited to the Mk6 Asker, PS3's will be my next tyre's!!
-
Continentals have also won the Which? tyre test.
Anyway, neither the Continentals nor Michelins have got the excellent rim protection of the Bridgestones.
-
Did they test any Toyos?

No. Only the usual suspects and some horrid cheepos.
-
Michellins have the rim protection.
-
^^^ Yes they do Asker
-
Michellins have the rim protection.
It's completely useless, touched a rim on Thursday
Hardly even hit the kerb, just a very slight touch..

No tyre will protect monza rims??? :lipsrsealed:
-
I know Michelins do, but as I clearly said and suggested earlier, not as good as the Bridgestones.
I have compared the two very carefully. There have been 3 instances when I have rubbed a kerb and the Bridgestone's rim protection was most welcome and effective.
I only wish they did'nt produce so much noise.
-
I had Dunlop SPs on my last car and they were very good at protecting my rims - not sure how they faired in the AE test though?
The last set of Michelins I had didn't last me more than 10k miles whereas the Dunlops used to do 30k + per set (albeit on a Quattro)
-
Sorry I forgot to ask in my previous post...what sort of mileage/wear are you getting on your current tyres and what make/type are they?
thanks
Adrian
-
I've got Bridgestones which came as original fitting with the car.
Done only 2300 miles so far.
Dunlops came out quite well. Quietest tyre. Not so good on the aquaplaning tests.
12 tyres tested, 225/40 R18 Y rated on a Scoda Octavia VRS.
Overall Score
1. Continental ContiSport Contact 3 100.0
2. Michelin Pilot Sport 3 99.4
3. Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 99.2
4. DunlopSP Sport Maxx TT 99.1
9 Bridgestone Potenza RE050A 97.5
I have also found out that there are a variety of Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tyres.
There is a specific R050A for VW and is more expensive than the Michelins or Continentals. It is specifically designed for low noise. Most confusing, as there is a range of RE050As from £116.33 to £151.68 each and fitted (Prices from Blackcircles). The £151.68 one is specifically for VW.
-
Thanks am1w
The current alloys have the Bridgestone Potenzas on. I'll see what tyres on the Vancouvers when I get them
-
Quick question for those with Continentals.
Are they still made in Germany?

I think so.
Near Hannover, Nothern Germany.

So far on my Mk 6 I have had the Dunlops (very good), the Michy PS3's (overrated no better than the Dunlops) and now the Vredestein Sessanta Ultracs and they are excellent, best tyre I have ever had.

Not tested in Autoexpress, so have to take your word for it.

Isn't that what counts? Real world drivers, on their own cars, over 20,000 varied miles in different weather etc? Anyone, like pants, everyone has a favorite and these are mine.

I'd say so...
Too many variables to say x is just 'better' than y.
Feel, driving style and confidence come into play as much as anything...and besides, you can change a tyres behaviour by playing with the pressures.
Personally, I've never foung Michelin Pilots that good on a FWD car...but great on RWD.
SportContacts I've never rated - OK, but little more.
Same with the Bridgestones fitted to the Mk6...
Personally, I'd trust the opinion of someone who drives in a similar manner, and past experience over a magazine test.

That's very interesting, do you have a specific part number for the £151.68 tyre?
My GT160 came with RE050-91W non-A tyres which are around £105 to replace.

David: I was discussing this with another member and it seems that these Bridgestones are a headache to order due to so many sub varieties for the same tyre and possibly part number. If mine ever wear out, I'll get something else from recommendations from the lads on the forum.
The Bridgestones are too noisy for me.
The non A tyre is not reinforced as you will see from the links.

I'm torn now between the Michys & Vredestein Sessanta Ultracs ?? Which is the best?? :undecided:
Gossa give us an update on th above mate?

It would seem from the above, your car may have the cheapest version as probably does mine.
Thanks, I'll probably stick to the basic bridgestones. I think they're pretty quiet and think it's the CAR which is very surface sensitive.
-
I think Am1W just listed the overall result. The order of them changed alot depending on the test sections. As the article was quite long and tested them in all sorts of different situations.
-
David: Made a mistake. Re-did the links. The non A tyre is not reinforced and is also not the cheapest either!
Sorry for the confusion.

Glen: Which tyres would you recommend for 18" wheels, please?

No problem, I've just been to the newagent and read the tests, perhaps I wouldnt choose bridgestone again!!

I know. Pretty hopeless result for such an expensive tyre.
I knew there was something wrong with them. The noise, oh the noise. Horrible.
The handling is also quite pooh!

AM1W are the links meant to go to specific tyres?
I totally agree though they are a headache to find.
After kerbing mine in the 1st week of ownership I was going to replace it as there was a chunk out of the sidewall. I couldn't find any in the country and even approached Bridgestone direct. Turns out there were none in the country so I eventually gave up  after lengthy emails back and forth to Bridgestone.
However I found out the RE050A had a few derivatives depending on what kind of car you have. The end letter refers to the tread type.
The proper one for the Golf ends in EZ and the Bridgestone code number is 2686
Here they are here for £124 (http://ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?details=Ordern&cart_id=34905630.110.30756&typ=R-167004&ranzahl=4&Breite=225&Quer=40&Felge=18&Speed=W&weiter=0&kategorie=6&Ang_pro_Seite=15&sort_by=brand&Transport=P&dsco=110&sowigan=So)

Thanks p3asa. Most helpful and I will put it in my favourites!
The Blackcircles link just proved your point that it is a nightmare to find the correct Bridgestone.

Glen: Which tyres would you recommend for 18" wheels, please?
I took Neil's suggestion of the Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics and the best praise for them is that you notice that they don't do anything nasty- if that makes sense?
They don't lock up easily...
They aren't noisy...
They don't break traction readily...
They don't understeer...
They just work, and work well. You can throw the car about with utter confidence, wet or dry and it does as it should.
Overall, I'm pleased...my father has just fitted a full set to his Mk5 GT 170PD and can't fault them either. (225/45/17)
He had the Bridgestones and hated them. The Goodyears make a better job of putting 170TDI torque down than the Bridgestones aever did (same driver, same car).
Neither of us have done enough miles to comment on the lack of life issues some complain of...although, personally, if I get 6000-8000 miles out of a front set I'll be happy, bearing in mind the grip available...rather that than 15000 miles on something that appears to be made of ebony.
To each their own...
But backroads, lots of power and torque and a heavy right foot isn't going to set any low wear records!
-
Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics , I found these very poor in winter but great summer tyre , once it gets down to low tempetures struggle (crap in snow!!)

Hence I took Neil's other suggestion of Vredestein Wintrac Extremes for winter:
No tyre that's great in summer can be good in winter...it's not possible.
You either get average performance all year round, or superb performance in summer, with awful winter manners...and you fit winter tyres in winter which are sublime when the temperature is below 7 degrees C...and lethal when it's much above!
-
Vredestein Sessanta Ultracs are they summer tyres Es3?
-
Vredestein Sessanta Ultracs are they summer tyres Es3?
Summer to all year round. More summer than cold/winter though.
I was tempted myself....heard many good things about them, but chose to go with Neil's views on the same car/wheels.
-
i have run the bridgstones, dunlops, and goodyears.
The goodyears by far the best by a mile. Admittedly not so so great in winter conditions but then how many tyres are. the only other I would fit myself are the ps3's.
Have been following all the tyre threads since the mk5 gti... con :nerd:sistently the top 3 are ps3, goodyear f1's and the vred's.
