Title: 1 litre of oil to 1000 miles
Post by: brendan on 11 September 2010, 13:40
Is it normal for 1.8 turbos to use near enough 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles. Seems mad to me and my old 1.8 turbo golf never used to user that much. This car drinks the stuff. There are no signs of leaking or any smoke out the exhaust.

I went down to skoda today and they said its normal! Is that right?

no no no no no a car should use NO oil in between services full stop skoda are only saying its normal because they are lazy bastards and cant be arsed to see what the problem is..Chances are there is a small leak from somewhere if not then it must be burning some oil.. a litre every 1k is a lot of oil to be losing regular..

When I check my oil I lose absolutely nothing between services.

that is quite alot of oil.

But at the same time my mates dad has an audi a4 2ltr petrol. and that does about 800miles to a litre of oil.

Aslong as the exhaust is not smoking and no leaks on the floor, don't worry about it.

Just worry about the cost of the oil! :(

How many miles has it done?

If i were you maybe try giving a good full service, new oil, new oil filter, new sparks etc. See if clears anything out

That is within the tolerances of the engine if you read your handbook; in fact i think its every 1000KM and not miles

Personally I think there's something wrong unless you're doing lots of short start / stop journeys

Sorry even if its within the tolerances how can that be right an engine losing that much oil ?? mine has lost about 500ml in the last 10000miles thats liveable but its not great..

I didn't say it was right or that I agreed with it

My dad had a 1.4 Golf and that was the same but VW didn't want to know so he traded it in for a Seat Ibiza with the SAME engine and that never drank oil in the 3 years he had it

Makes no sense does it.. i would give it a full service and then if it still does it just ignore it if its within tolerances not a lot you can do..

It's done 95,000 miles so not a huge mileage. I'm giving it a full service tomorrow and I'll monitor it from there. It seems to drive fine so I really don't know what's going on. Yeah the handbook does say its within the tolerances, but I think thats a bit of a cop out.

I do about 6 miles to work in the morning and 6 miles back a day.

Seems a lot to be honest.

My golf does the same.....An engine can use oil in lots of ways from the valves into the bores to piston rings not sealing properly....I would start to worry if there was signs of oil in the exhaust tail pipes...Have a good loook around the engine bay bud, if its dirty get it steam cleaned then run the car for a while and have another look for any signs of leakage

Noticed mine is doing this but worse probably. Thought ill randomly check the oil after 3 months and there was nothing there I have done no more than 2k miles since service. Its only 1.4 :(

On turbo models it may be signs off turbo oil seals on the way out. If its burning very little it will be hard to notice the loss of oil. Another common thing is the sump plug and washer. The cars have ally sumps and are very easily crossed threaded, this would let oil weep out.

Other than that could be valve stem oil seals, piston oil seals letting abit of oil past and into combustion chamber, very heavy breathing engine.

None of the above sounds good. I've removed all of the PCV system and it is now breathing to atmosphere but I can see no signs of any oily residue in the pipework.
