Title: 2006 GTi Tyre Spec

Hi

Could anyone please confirm the correct specification of tyres for my 2006 Golf GTi 2.0? I've been told its 225 45 r17 91Y - is the 91Y right?

I'm sure i was previously told by someone the Golf needed an XL tyre, but my VW garage says not.

Y is rated at over 180 mph so more than safe for a GTI

Are those the right numbers for 17" wheels? Mine is on 225 45 18 91Y extra load.

Sorry I meant 225 40 18 91Y XL

Just to clarify-do I definitely need XL tyres? Its just when i checked with my local VW garage they said just standard load...

Your VW garage are muppets and I'd suggest you go elsewhere. You need XL tyres.

I thought it depended on the rim size - 17" XL not needed, 18" needed.

Anyone care to comment?

Did anyone's 17s come from the factory with XL tyres?

Does anyone have an official source for this? I can't find it in the manual at all and I know that some Seats only require XL on the 18 and not on the 17.

Why would you need XL as long as the speed rating,size etc is correct they should be fine.

You NEED XL tyre's as the guys above have said.

Simply put, you can void your insurance for not fitting the correct one's if not.  XL tyre's are rated to hold more weight than non XL.  So for instance each tyre can hold say 550KG and the XL 650KG.

Bear in mind you could have passnegers and luggage at some point and this is when you'll void the insurance (should anyone bother to check !)

Get XL's it's what's on your car at the moment surely why change ?

No one has provided source to confirm what they're saying. As far as I can see it doesn't mention it at all in the manual!

It can only affect insurance if it has to have XL. So far no source has been provided showing that to be the case

It easy to disagree with stealers and say they know nowt but where's the proof?

Well i just googled it and got about 20 different answers, all the same opinion I might add :P

It's this simple.  The manufacturer has stated the car needs this tyre.  The reason is the XL tyre can take more load.   You have to take into account this covers high speed and high speed cornering under loaded weight not just people in your car or luggage etc.

Standard tyre's are about 35psi on average and the XL 40psi+, Obviosuly from that you can tell it will carry more weight more safely.

Take this example.  You buy non XL tyre's.  As a one off you ferry 4 people and luggage to the Airport.  Driving along you hit a pothole and because you don't have the XL tyre to take the impact of all that weight, your tyre's blows and you crash..... ( bit sombre but plausable).

Cops come along check your tyre's (assuming they notice) and carry you busted up car and body off to somewhere safe.  If they've noted the tyre's on the inspection that's it your insurance is void and you'll get nothing, simply because you didn't follow the manufacturers guidelines.  Why would you even risk it tbh ?

I know this as I've ordered non XL tyre's for my Mondeo (now replaced with a golf :P).  The fitters refused to fit the tyre's because they we're not suitable for the car.  They ordered the correct XL's and i returned the next day, a little embarrased :P

From my own observations, all the (brand new) GTI's that I've seen came with 225/45 R17 91W tyres, or 225/40 R18 92Y XL tyres if optioned with 18" wheels. But anyway, only one way to know for sure...
