bought a MK 4 GTI on saturday, im feeling somewhat done over though, car seems to drive fine when first started but after about an hour or so the exhaust starts blowing as if it were something to do with the coilpacks or plugs..only problem is, i had it plugged in and the fault its showing is turbo boosting too high...any ideas on this one? the car refuses to go past a certain amount of revs unless i downshift when its playing up and then boot the backside out of it...doesnt mind sitting at about 3grand on the revs though. car has cut out when idling and also whilst going round a roundabout in 2nd gear...also on the motorway at about 70...bit worrying...any help massively appreciated!

What engine is it?? Could be MAF meter, or maybe problem with the turbo actuator. Welcome to the mk4 golf world, they seem to be poorly more than well, espcially those horrid petrol motors :evil: Sell it and get a gt tdi, will be posting on here alot less if you had a tdi :wink: :laugh:

if its an AGU could be the ignition thing that goes on the air box :undecided:

As said to further help/advise you can you put up your engine code be it AGU,AUM,AUQ etc you can find it in your service book (data sticker) or on the cyl head three letters will be stamped into the casting of the code its at the inlet manifold side l/h nearest the cam belt plastic cover sounds like the code for overboosting could be 17963 but if you can get it on vag-com you can scan it for any stored codes if there are other things also causing the fault

sorry ive not replied yet on this thread, ive been workin n whatnot...the engine in question is the 1.8 20v Turbo. code is AGU. dont think it would be the MAF meter myself as even if that was taken out of the system the car wouldnt stall whilst idling...however it has and does atm...i thought myself maybe its a problem with the cat, as that would cause that issue....but it would surely run like a pig all the time and it doesnt...any further help greatly appreciated!

further info to ad, the fault codes are as follows
0220 - Maximum boost pressure exceeded
0231 - Lambda adoption multiplicative too low
im completely lost on 0231...not a clue... :undecided:

i think im going to have to bite the bullet and get it diagnosed by a vm, thanks for narrowing it down for me though people =)

you say it stalls when coming to idle? If so start off by cleaning the throttle body.
Try unplug the MAF and see if the car runs better without the MAF plugged in, if it does then you have a faulty MAF.
