Hello Everyone,
Just thought I would pop on and say hello. Just purchased my first VW Golf GTi 8v, it's a 97 MK3 in Red. Pretty immaculate inside and out. Pretty impressed so far, easy to drive and comfortable. Only mods (I think ) is a full cat back scorpian exhaust system. Bit to loud for my taste though haha. Fast enough car for what I need it for, not like I'm going out racing everyone. So not getting involved in the 16v/8v debate. :nerd:
Will post up pics at somepoint, but generally will be on here for information as I am pretty clueless about them at the minute. My only gripe so far would be fuel consumption, so any pointers in that area would be great.

hello.
a good service - plugs , oil , oil filter , air filter change , clean out the throttle body and maybe oil breather pipes should maybe help with the fuel consumption.
then again , new car - heavy foot?
can't remember the round town figure for my mk3 8v but it'd do 40mpg at a steady 70mph.
I've had a mk2 8v , mk2 16v and a mk3 8v . I'd have another mk3 8v so they can't be that bad can they?

Thanks for the reply.
Still haven't had a chance to have a good look around the engine bay yet, make sure it's all tickity boo. Will be next thing to do once I get a chance.
I know what your saying with new car haha. I'm not expecting anything amazing from it, espicially 40mpg from an old 2.0l, but at the minute averaging 22-25mpg, which is not the worse, but I reckon could do a little better.
I love it, always wanted one and just love the look of them, was so glad they were so nice to drive.

I just did a quick search and found a post by me from 3 years ago
seems i used to get around 20mpg on my daily crawl to work but that was fairly heavy stop start traffic.

Welcome along! Check out the mk3 section, we're a friendly bunch and theres lots of useful information.
RE: fuel consumption, never trust the mfa - it always lies. Brim the tank, take note of how many miles you've covered and brim the tank again, then get the pen & paper out. If you find that then you think your consumption is waay to high the first thing I would do is give the car a good service.
On a good, gentle motorway run I can just about squeeze 40mpg out of mine, however on an 'enthusiastic' drive or around town it is common to see 20-25mpg. It all depends on driving style and the type of driving your doing

Thanks for the welcome.
Aftert looking over the car, I think the problem could be the lamda sensor (/probe hate that word lol) or the thermostat, so I might just replace them, easy job and not that expensive. Just trial and error I suppose, but maybe its just me and my led foot.
Anyone know where I can get cheap exhaust mounts? The rubber bits, as mine are a bit saggy/soft and the exhaust doesn't sit right.
Thanks. :nerd:
